Book: What you left behind Author: Jessica Verdi Pages: 368 Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3,5/5)
Synopsis: It's all Ryden's fault. If he hadn't gotten Meg pregnant, she would have never stopped her chemo treatments and would still be alive. Instead he's failing fatherhood one dirty diaper at a time. And it's not like he's had time to grieve while struggling to care for their infant daughter, start his senior year, and earn the soccer scholarship he needs to go to college.
The one person who makes Ryden feel like his old self is Joni. She's fun and energetic-and doesn't know he has a baby. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to keep his two worlds separate. Finding one of Meg's journals only stirs up old emotions. Ryden's convinced Meg left other notebooks for him to find, some message to help his new life make sense. But how is he going to have a future if he can't let go of the past?
Thoughts: Yet another book where I have some mixed feelings, it seems to be the trend amongst my latest contemporary reads. But onto what I actually thought about the book. There was nothing wrong with the writing, it was easy to follow but nothing special really. What bothered me was Ryden’s approach to the whole baby-situation, he didn’t want to spend time with his daughter and was overall an uncommitted parent for at least the first half of the book. Then again he was put in an extremely difficult situation, and I can’t imagine what he was going through so maybe I should cut him some slack. My favourite characters where Joni and Ryden’s mother. I think they were the kinds of people that I could see myself being friends with, they were just very caring and likeable characters. Ryden’s mom was supportive and loving without letting him off easily. To finish of I have to say I did enjoy reading the book even though I had some problems with it. And I think that it’s a good read since it discusses important issues, even though you might not agree with the characters decisions always. And the family aspects of the novel were really nice to see.
