"Can you see now why staying was never an option for me?”
Cornelius reached over and took Watt’s hand, squeezing tight. “I made a promise to you. To Nina.” He smiled at Maggie. “To Maggie. I’m in it for the long haul.”
Watt was stunned. He stared down at their hands, then to Maggie, and then back at their hands. He squeezed Cornelius’ hand and whispered, “And what did you promise her? Doggie bowls made of gold?”
Cornelius laughed. He laughed so damn hard that he startled both Watt and Maggie. It felt deep and scraping, pulling on the threads tangled in his heart. He said, “I promised I’d keep you out of trouble, Watt Johnson.”
“Oh,” Watt said, and then he laughed quietly. “Funny thing, that. Aren’t you full of trouble?”
Today's WIP Wednesday features this gorgeous artwork by Benedetta Massaro of Watt Johnson and Cornelius Sawyer! They are two sides of the same bookmark, and you can see the full thing in my stories. I may be staring at it and petting it from time to time, don't judge.
