September is National Sewing Month.

Book conservators have always bound books to extend their lives. Our preservation staff at Harvard Library still do! Here, a woman sits by a book press, sewing leaves with thread to make a book block that could then be bound with a more durable material such as leather on a binding board.

Work in progress~Turning a batch of beech handles for presses and ploughs. The threaded portion needs to be turned down to an accurate 1 1/4″ thoughout. If not, the transitional movement will not be smooth. Once this part is done, I will proceed to shaping the handle and giving them their finish.

We gave one of our 19th Century book presses a facelift today. We replaced its marble base, and sured up the bolts. The original marble cracked down the middle and has slowly crumbled away over the years; now it’s as good as new and beautiful as it ever was.👌🏼 #bookpress #bindery #antique #eidolonhouse #bookbinder #studio #workshop #restoration #booklife
