Spoilers for Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation
My favorite gradual reveal was definitely figuring out that, not only did Lan Wangji tolerate Wei Wuxian's constant talking, but enjoys it. He loves listening to this man's unbridled rambling. Even Wei Wuxian doesn't know what he's talking about, but Lan Wangji is following along the whole way.
It's not even a "my beloved has been dead for over a decade" kinda thing. Back when they were kids he liked Wei Wuxian. He liked how playful and chatty he was, despite everyone treating Lan Wangji like the perfect moon at night, someone no one could dare to reach out to, Wei Wuxian did. He took one look at this beautiful man and said "that's a person." Might have been a first for Lan Wangji. Well, besides his brother and mom. Uncle definitely leans hard into the perfection of his nephews.
It's interesting seeing the comparison though. Lan Zhan's person is Wei Wuxian. Someone who's willing to play with him. To argue and laugh, but not demand. He doesn't push Lan Wangji to talk more, but to express more. For him it's fun to see all these sides of Lan Wangji. If you're mad, be mad, fight it out. If you're sad, be sad.
Meanwhile Lan Xichen had his "bros," Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue. He was the more expressive brother, but was he? He was always seen a warm and friendly. Which I find very diffrent. Nie Mingjue was known for his explosive temper. He would be the last person on the planet to look down on someone's anger. I fully believe they were each other's person. Helping each other express all those held in emotions and getting to the other side. Then comes....Jin Guangyao....I have a lot of thoughts on this man. Mainly that he did love Lan Xichen. Not romantically, but Philia.
Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen's relationship is diffrent than Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen's. It was close, but until Nie Mingjue died i don't think it was as close. After Wei Wuxian was killed, Lan Zhan was a wreck. When Nie Mingjue died, Lan Xichen couldn't go to him. Even though I'm sure Lan Wangji would be more than willing to comfort his brother, I don't think he was in the right state nor do I think Lan Xichen would want to burden him any more. He literally only had Jin Guangyao to go to. Now, he doesn't have anyone. He lost both his people to each other. At least this time he can lean on his brother?
