@boomerjj said: “Get out of my face before I punch you in yours.”
“Sorry?” Morty’s tone made it clear that his response was not an apology, but an interrogative. What he really meant was, Seriously? What’s your problem? What he said was only a little more diplomatic: “What did I do to you?” Though he asked the question, there was no good reason for such immediate hostility over bumping into each other on accident. Of course, that was the Rowdyruff modus operandi; unprompted violence. They didn’t even have qualms about laying hands on women if their lifelong rivalry with the Utonium sisters was anything to go by. Morty had heard “We had another fight with the Rowdyruff boys” innumerable times, and though the rate of their scraps had dwindled as they’d all grown up, it had concerned him majorly back when Bubbles had dated the guy—skipping straight from being enemies to being publicly together. Fortunately that hadn’t lasted too long, but Morty had remained privately suspicious of the simple “incompatibility” reasoning provided for their breakup. He couldn’t imagine there wasn’t some weight behind their inherent incompatibility that really meant Boomer was too toxic to be around for long.
Years later, and Millie ended up dating him, then breaking up with the same story about how they “wanted different things.” Morty hadn’t felt it was his right to pry into the details of either of his (at the time) exes’ relationships, taking only what they felt comfortable telling him, but their vagueness in describing the fall-outs of their flings with Boomer said enough that he knew they weren’t amicable. All of his suspicions and distrust of the guy over the years flooded back now, bringing his blood almost to boiling point as he matched Boomer’s angry gaze. He should have just walked away instead of engaging, but he was never one to shy from confrontation. He also should have been more cognizant of the fact that if this actually turned physical, if Boomer upheld his threat, it wouldn’t be a well-matched fight at all—but he wasn’t thinking of Boomer’s inhuman durability or his own lack of super-strength. The only thought that actually held him back was that Bubbles wouldn’t like it. Meanwhile, the rest of him screamed to make a point that the other man couldn’t get away with treating people (especially good, innocent people like Bubbles and Millie) the way he did without being called on it.
