he smiled, and then he bent down a little ways, giving butto several loving pats.

he said this, and then, seeing the look on her face, he hesitated——seeming to think better of the thing altogether.
“ david? ”
he turned, and then he made a series of very animated hand gestures——and, of course, he might as well have been talking to himself.
his tone turned sharp after this, and very irritable——and the next thing he knew, he was shouting across the lawn.
“ david——damn you, david! ”
naturally, if his mother hadn’t been standing right there, he would’ve said worse than that.
“ come get him, man! ”
