On This Day in Baseball History January 5, 1963: Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby (April 27, 1896 - January 5, 1963) passes away. Hornsby is considered by many to be the best right-handed hitter in history. Hornsby led the National League in hitting seven times including six straight seasons from 1920- 1925. His best season at the plate was in 1924 when he batted .424. Hornsby finished three seasons with a .400+ average and lmhe led the league in hits four times with a league best 250 hits in 1922. Hornsby won the NL MVP award in 1925 and 1929. He also won two NL Triple Crowns in 1922 and 1925. Hornsby would be inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942.
