Been up to a little art lately! Symbolism under the cut.
Rose (image 1): I’ve always considered the rose a symbol of oppression. The beauty it presents can only be accessed by accepting its thorns. In this context, the rose is a symbol of labor, pricking fingers in the name of minuscule reward.
Daffodils/Narcissus: My symbol of the oppressing class. Named for Narcissus, they appear to me as a perfect metaphor for those who admire their own wealth to block out the cries of those in need. (As Narcissus admired his beauty rather than hearing Echo.) Here, daffodils bloom from the blood of the masses, they benefit from our hurt.
Carnation: (Image 2): A symbol of freedom from oppression, the carnation is like a rose without the thorns, a reward without the pain. When we throw out our roses and their thorns, the narcissus flowers wither without our toils fueling them.
Background: This was inspired by The Oh Hellos’ song Passerine, so the backdrop is the album cover art.
(The red and gold is purposeful too, a long standing symbol of leftist revolutions (although I’m strictly non-authoritarian.)
