Urgent! Bottle babies need rescue! - Baltimore, MD
Togepi 1and 2 - Under a week old, 1 male 1 female, under 1 lb
Togepi 1 and 2 are too young to stay in the shelter overnight so we are urgently looking for a rescue to take over their care by tonight.
They will need typical bottle baby care, and need to be weighed daily and have their appetite monitored to ensure they are growing. At this time, their temperatures are too low to read, so we have them placed in our incubator. Once warmed, we will conduct a full intake exam.
Togepi 1 and 2 both appear to have either eye injuries or illness. Once they have had their full exam, we will have more information, and can send it to you upon request.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
The BARCS Rescue Team

Hi Dr Ferox! In light of your recent kitten videos I was wondering if there are any health or behavioural issues that hand reared kittens are particularly prone to, either as kittens or later on in life?
Once you’ve got them to the weaning stage and they’re on solid food, their health is generally comparable to kittens raised on their mother. A random newborn kitten, when you don’t know what the mother’s health was or whether she was vaccinated, comes with a whole lot of unknowns. You can get an unspecified ‘fading kitten syndrome’ where you’re likely to lose those kittens no matter what you do, perhaps it was an issue with the immunity from the mother, but once you pass that delicate stage and they’re on solids they generally catch up well.
Socially is another matter because bottle raised kittens have missed out on socializing and learning manners from mum. She would have taught them things like when they are biting too hard and how to ‘talk cat’. Kittens raised in a group, even without their mum, often have less issue in this regard. Socializing bottle kittens is important, you want them to get used to being handled by different people and seeing other animals, which is easier if you already have adult cats. Without socializing them you will get poorly behaved or anxious creatures that don’t like to be out of their comfort zone but they’re not necessarily all going to be terrors.
The kittens I’ve raised in groups that got to stay in that group of two or three have been lovely cats, though closely bonded with each other of course.
My four foster kittens: Salazar, Rowena, Helga, and Godric. They’re only about 3 weeks old? I love them so much
Taking care of these babies is the best/worst feeling ever. I know that I’m helping them since the mama took off… but I won’t be able to keep them.
