Currently, I am working on a 10-foot sculpture of Muhammad Ali, commemorating his knock-out championship fight with Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine. The large sculpture initially was created in clay, that is then cut into sections for further work and then transported to the foundry for casting in bronze.
Over the weekend, we paid a visit to Muhammad Ali’s Deer Lake training camp near Reading, PA. As I near completion of the sculpture, I found it inspiring to be in his camp equipped with boxing ring, punching bag, boxing attire, gloves and headgear. Jeff Julian, who photographed Ali when he was younger, kindly showed us around the property and spoke of his experiences with Ali. Ali would ring the camp bell every morning at 4:30 am to wake everyone as he began training. We walked around the premises, climbing into the boxing ring, and visiting the bedroom he slept in.
