Restrained Robin
by Bill Marimon
I suspect he would escape from this fairly easily, but it'd be fun to watch him do it! :D
Okay, I was about to ask why nobody told me about the Prime 1 Studio Joker "Say Cheese" state which came out a couple of years ago.
It's basically 99cm/39" tall, has a variety of interchangeable heads
As well as arms and accessories
But whichever version you get, they all share the same base, and if you hadn't already spotted it, that's where they put the bit that perhaps interests ME more! :) Because that is a rather nice bound and gagged Robin about to be engulfed in Joker venom gas!
All right, it's one of those sort of odd Robin designs where they combing Dick and Jason's collar with Tim's black cape, and it might have worked better in yellow, but I can live with that.
So why did no one tell me? PErhaps because, at a mere $1500 plus, it might be a bit beyond most peoples budget, including mine, of course, as I'd either have to paty THAT much then a horrendous quantity for shipping and then wonder where the hell I was even going to PUT a 1 metre tall Joker statue, even with a nice Boy Hostage... so maybe it's better they didn't.
Still...
how do you get all these amazing artists do accept your “boy hostage” style commissions? teach me your ways!
Getting commissions is fairly straightforward. e-bay has a lot available (but check past examples and their feedback rating), and then there are places like http://www.catskillcomics.com and browsing through www.deviantart.com of www.comicartfans.com to find an artist whose style you like can often be useful. Or sometimes at the artists own website. (I've also been lucky that a couple of the artists were just starting out when I asked, and they've since gone on to bigger things.)
If your tastes veer towards the outré or risqué (which I freely confess mine do) I always ask the artists if it's something they'd be prepared to do. Most are completely amenable (They're professionals, they know a gig is a gig), but others politely decline and that's fine, with no hard feelings on either side (and I have some extremely good non-risqué art from them instead, so no one lost).
I'm fortunate in some respects that whilst I do like a good tie up and a silly comic-book deathtrap, I tend not to want anything TOO OTT, I'm not into the more exotic or extreme fetishes (no violence, blood, nudity, sexual assault or the like), and I do ask for an older Robin. I also often throw in "Within Comic Code Authority guidelines (more or less)", which I often find helps, since I like "suggestive" a lot more than "overly blatant". (I've been told by more than one professional artist that I'm good at suggesting creative scenarios along the right lines, which is very nice of them to say.)
I've found if you can give the artists something they might enjoy too, as a challenge or a theme, you always get better results, and be open to their suggestions too.
Avoid being too specific. I learned my lesson the hard way there (and that was entirely on me, not the artist); they gave me what I asked for, when I should have left things looser and allowed the one with the actual artistic talent to make decisions.
For example, for my George Perez piece, all I said was "Dick Grayson in his New Teen Titans Robin period, in some sort of bondage, with an option of a distressed costume, but none of the heavier fetishes (no piercing, nudity, bruising or the like)" and the result I got was amazing! :D
I often ask if the artist has a villain they'd like to use, maybe one they've never had the chance to draw but always wanted to. (Just as an example, Freddie Williams asked if he could use the Joker (like I was going to say no, particularly because I'd never seen him draw the Joker and was curious) and he loved my idea of Joker playing "Operation!" with a captive Robin) so the output was something he had fun with and it shows.
