Heat Wave

Blue’s POV

Kneeling in the red dirt, I carefully pulled weeds from around the carrots, being sure not to leave the roots in the ground. Just as Avi had taught me. I paused and looked up at the sky. It was a crisp blue, the sun a beacon in the sky beating down on me. It was especially hot this summer. I wasn’t sure if the garden would survive the heat wave. I glanced at the nearly empty bucket of water I gathered from the spring this morning. The spring hardly flowed today. I needed something to nourish the crops.

I stood up and walked to the cliff’s edge. I looked listlessly at the dark green of the forest stretching out past the horizon. A moment passed and then my eyes widened with realization. The forest was lush and green. Surely it’s soil would be able to help the crops? I ran back to the temple to prepare for a journey down the volcano.

“Avi, why don’t we ever go down the volcano?” I sat on the temple steps watching Avi hang up the linens to dry. He sighed.

“Why should we, Blue?” He peeked over a sheet at me. “We have everything we need here.” I looked thoughtfully at the ground. He was right. The garden provided our food, the spring behind the temple provided out water, and the temple provided our shelter.

“What if we didn’t?” I asked slowly. Avi shot me a puzzled look. “Didn’t have everything we need, I mean,” I explained quickly. Avi walked around the clothesline and sat down next to me on the steps.

“If that ever happened, then we would need to go to the village.” He told me gently as he put his arm around my shoulders.

“Where is the village?” I badgered him. He stood up and motioned for me to come with him. We walked to the start of the path down the volcano.

“This path leads directly to the village.” He pointed off in the distance. “It leads in that direction, far beyond the horizon on the other side of the forest.”

“Why haven’t we ever gone there?” I stared wide-eyed at the idea of a place beyond the forest that seemed to stretch on forever. He knelt down in front of me, meeting my gaze.

“Blue, the forest doesn’t want to be bothered.” His expression was pensive. “Do you understand?” I nodded solemnly. He smiled and stood up. He ruffled my hair before returning to the chores.

Accepting Alteration

Blue’s POV

I looked slowly around the temple. It’s been 5 years since anyone has visited the temple. I looked lethargically down the corridor leading to Avi’s chambers. It’s been 5 years since Avi found me. I looked mournfully towards the staircase at the back of the hall leading down to the catacombs. It’s been 5 days since Avi died.

On the first day, I brought Avi’s breakfast to his room. He’d fallen ill a few days prior. I set the tray down on the work table at the end of his bed. I went to wake him as I had yesterday. He wouldn’t respond. Terrified I left the room and went outside where I engrossed myself in tending to the garden for hours. He never woke up.

On the second day, I returned to his room. I brought the materials to prepare his body for burial. While I worked angry tears stung my eyes. He had taught me the process of a burial last year. We had taken in a stray dog who was very sick. The dog only lived another month after we took him in but I hope he was content during that last month. When I finished I went outside,  walked up to the cliff's edge, and began to scream. I screamed for the dog. I screamed for Avi. I screamed for myself. I screamed until my throat was raw and my voice was hoarse.

On the third day, I moved his body to the catacombs. I laid him carefully in the marble tomb. I had spent hours gathering a small bouquet of mountain orchids for him. I placed them on his chest. I laid down next to the open tomb and cried, begging that somehow he’d wake up. That somehow he wouldn't leave me. I cried myself to sleep. When I woke around nightfall I peered into his tomb. He hadn’t been revived. Disheartened I pushed the heavy marble lid onto the tomb. I left the catacombs and slept on the floor of his room.

On the fourth day, I laid on the floor of his room. I drifted in and out of sleep. When I slept, I dreamed of all the good times we had. When I was awake I was either sobbing or laying there numb to the world,  trapped inside the quiet noise of my head. There wasn’t a thing in the world that could comfort me. I was alone.

On the fifth day, today, I woke up in the late afternoon. My head felt clearer. I cleaned myself up. I ate what I could manage. I tended to the garden. I cleaned the temple. I stood in the temple hall and the hot, arid air felt stale. The marble floors somehow were still cool against the soles of my feet. I leaned against a pillar, looking out the main entrance. The world outside was bright. I could see the cracks in the scorched ground from where I was. I squinted, trying to see farther down the path leading to the temple steps. Not a soul in sight.

This was my temple now.
