Jim as a zombie?

I experimented a bit with this one since it’s something that’s outside my general wheelhouse, which turned out to be rather fun.

once they’re deep enough into the woods, mike stops and turns towards 011 ( as she’d been labeled by whoever was using her for experiments ), the girl he’s fondly nicknamed el. unfortunately, mike’s come to discover she’s actually some brain-eating mutant. a zombie or sorts, but he doesn’t really like using that word. there are so many negative connotations to it. mutant isn’t any better, either, but it reminds him of the x-men, so that’s cool. however, he calls el neither of these to her face. she deals with enough as it is without someone making her feel like some kind of freak or monster. she’s just a kid, and her situation is by no means her fault.

“ this should be good, ” he says, exhaling a sigh as he props his hands on his hips, giving the area a good once over. “ yeah. if we wait long enough, i’m sure a rabbit or squirrel will happen by. ” it’s not the same as human brains, which is what she’s accustomed to, but surely it has to be better than nothing. it’s the best mike can do for the time being, especially since she’s becoming more and more irritable everyday. according to el, if she isn’t fed frequently enough she’ll become feral, much like the the creatures in day of the dead.

looking back at el, mike offers her a reassuring smile. this must be really weird for her, at least as weird as it is for him. but this is where their life has come to, so they’ve got to make the best of it. “ if we’re lucky, maybe a deer will pass by. ” god, he really hopes an animal is enough. what’s he supposed to do if she absolutely needs human brains? he supposes he’ll cross that bridge when he gets there. “ so, uh... i guess maybe we should be quiet now, huh? ”

Sometimes it’s hard to notice he’s in sickbay at all. It gets pretty noisy in there, especially on the Enterprise - what with the constant stream of unknown infections, ever-stranger alien encounters, and not to mention the inter-ship drama that goes down bedside of a senior officer, he can understand how he sometimes gets overlooked. But he’s not there for flashy moments. He appreciates the quiet after the storm, the dim lighting of med bay after hours, and the soft ‘thank you’ from his patients. That’s how he knows he’s supposed to be here.
