The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti is a book that’s been on the #backlist a while. “After years in the run, Samuel Hawley moves to his late wife’s hometown with his daughter, Loo. He works as a fisherman while Loo struggles to fit in at school and wonders about her mother’s mysterious death. Haunting them are the twelve scars on Hawley from bullets in his criminal past. A past that eventually will catch up to both of them.” This book is a combination of crime fiction and coming of age. Hawley is almost an anti-hero. He’s a criminal but wants a life for his daughter. And Loo is like every teenager trying to figure things out. The book goes from the present back to the story of every bullet wound that Hawley has. Until we get the final reckoning. The ending is vague but it works. I enjoyed this character and story from Tinti.
