SURVIVING FRESHMAN YEAR by Brea Johnson
First and Foremost WELCOME TO KENT. Here you will learn about life, love, literature and so much more in between. Most importantly you will learn about yourself and who you want to be as a person. Since I am the person that I am I wanted to give you guys 10 tips on surviving freshmen year:
Tip #1: This is a fresh start don’t harp on things that happened in high school this is your chance to recreate who you want to be
Tip #2: GET INVOLVED, I bold that because its important getting accumulated with the school early is crucial, the more involved you get the more it'll help you in the long run. I PROMISE
Tip #3: How you start is how you finish, start off strong in all your classes, if you need help Kent offers so many resources to help accommodate you. I say this because playing catch up is much harder than just staying on track. You think you’re missing out so you skip class but when you have to now play catch up u will REALLY miss out.
Tip #4: Get to know everyone, just because someone doesn't look like you, come from where u come from or dance to the same beat at you doesn't mean they aren't worthy getting to know. Make more than one group of friends, be friendly and explore others ways of thinking. You can learn a lot from just simply saying hi to someone and starting small talk
Tip #5: Balance your time. It’s a time for play and a time for work. Nothings wrong with doing both. You actually need both in order for you not completely go mad with stress. Sets goals for your assignments and then plans after, or vice versa. Whatever works for you.
Tip #6: Don’t be afraid to try new things and join a group that interests you. You’ll never know until you try and even if you try and it doesn't work out well at least you know now what’s not for you on your quest to find out what is for you.
Tip #7: Everything around you is a learning lesson whether it be horrible or fantastic take a positive from it and know that everything that is happening happens for a reason, no feeling of despair is permanent unless you allow it to be. Happiness is the goal always
Tip #8:BE YOURSELF, college is a time to figure out somewhat who you are, being someone else wont help that process. If something doesn't seem to feel right or suit you don’t force it, always listen to your inner voice, it has never led me wrong because I trust myself and who I'm becoming daily.
Tip #9: Don’t be afraid to ask questions in or after class. You pay to go here, get your monies worth. Professors are here to help always.
Tip #10: HAVE FUN. Freshmen year was my favorite year I learned so much about myself, I laughed I cried but all in all it’s a year I will never forget. Make the best of this experience it is one you wont forget.
I hope these tips help you. In closing “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.-Bruce Lee
