A concrete barrier of hardened strength is meant to block & keep one out. Yet by hugging its walls, learning its shape, & finding its cracks/crevices, this tiny/delicate Bodhi Tree still managed to push through & blossom on the other side. And also, make the wall even stronger by filling its voids, thus co-exist with the barrier.
In Buddhism, the Bodhi Tree (aka "Tree of Awakening"), is a symbol of significant relevance/reverence/worship, as under the shade of this fig tree is where Siddhartha Gautama sat & meditated for 49 days, attaining enlightenment. Afterwards, Siddhartha became known as the Buddha…"Enlightened One".
The location (Mahabodhi Temple, India) quickly became a site of worship, where the emperor King Ashoka (268 to 232 BCE) held festivals each year. However Ahoka's wife, Queen Tissarakkhā, envious of the attention lavished on the Bodhi Tree, ordered the tree to be destroyed using black magic. And yet despite her feeble attempts, the tree grew back, thus attaining even greater significance, with even a monastery then erected around it in its honor.
Later, further attempts to destroy the Bodhi Tree were made, with King Pushyamitra Shunga (2nd Century B.C.) & King Shashanka (600 A.D.) cutting it down. And yet every time the tree was destroyed, the Bodhi Tree either grew back or was replanted from the same tree strain.
Today, over 2 million visitors each year frequent the Mahabodhi Temple to worship the Bodhi Tree. And a crack team of scientists continue to nurse its aging limbs, while also growing new offspring from the tree, preserving its incredible history, lineage, and meaning.
