The former chief of police of the Seattle P.D. has recently admitted that he ordered his officers to gas “non violent, non-threatening protesters.” In his book, ‘Breaking Rank’, Norm Stamper explains how his officers dressed in “military garb, carrying military weapons” engaged in “aggressive military actions against non-violent protesters.” He now says that this was the worst mistake of his career. This is just one example of how police action in the United States has become increasingly militarised over the last 20 years or so. It is not just local authorities that are claiming the need for military weaponry; Federal agencies are now also clamouring for a share of the excess military equipment pie.
