A slightly more obscure choice for a tv show that denies the sanctity straightness is the Japanese anime Ouran High School Host club. The main character, Haruhi, stumbles upon an all boy club where the boys charm their female guests to make them feel good about themselves. Haruhi, as punishment for breaking a vase in their room, is forced to join the club. The queer aspect is in how heteronormative everything appears to be in terms of the opposite sex interactions, until it is quickly revealed that Haruhi is a girl. Her more masculine features allow her to pass for a guy and they keep her in the club. The show queers audience’s perspectives and denies the sanctity of straightness where the boys who run the Ouran club allow Haruhi to stay, as guests are unknowingly charmed by a woman. It toys with the idea of experimenting with one’s sexuality, not caring what a person’s gender identification is, and just enjoying who they are as a being. The boys in club find themselves being oddly attracted to her after revealing she’s a girl, even though she is normally presented to the world as a boy. Heteronormativity is thrown out the window in this show, show that it is acceptable to love and respect someone for who they are, regardless of their gender identification, and that being attracted a more androgynous person is completely acceptable.
