Dean Smith: Report From The Front
Imagine working at the Post Office and receiving this message from one of your pilots:
Dead sticked
Flying low
Only place available
On cow
Killed cow
Wrecked plane
Scared me
Smith
(followed by an image of Smith, a dark-haired man with heavy brows and a thick mustache.)
Mi nayme is Deen
And wen I fly
Mi styck gone ded
I do aspy
A playce to land
Unhappey now
I land, I'm scaird
I kill a cow.
I don't think I previously posted this but I just found it in my photo roll and had to share (possibly again). This is a placard from the flight section of the Henry Ford Museum. And that is my bredlik.
My nayme is Bird
and wen it's nyte,
a dozing man
I giev a fryte.
His weary mynde
evokes Lenore,
I play a trick,
I tap the door.
What is Bredlik about? What are Bredlik poems?
Bredlik is a fun little poetry style that was mostly popular 5+ years ago. They are mostly about animals, but can be able anything at all. The main rule is that the poem needs to follow a specific syllable count and rhyme scheme.
It's written in iambic dimeter, meaning that each line has only 4 syllables and the 2nd and 4th are the stressed (emphasized) ones.
It should have 8 lines and the rhyme should be xAxAxBxB. In other words, the 2nd and 4th line need to rhyme and the 6th and 8th as well. The final line usually stands out as something of a punchline.
Bredlike poems should also be written in the first person and most are intentionally misspelled in a fake-middle english style. I, personally, find that the misspelling often gets over-done to the point of being difficult to read fluidly.
This blog post explains the origin and structure in more detail.
