There has, however, been talk of a fourth possibility, but one which Article 50 does not address: that the Article 50 process can be stopped in its tracks. Two situations are envisaged. The first is where, in a general election before the completion of the negotiations, a party is elected on the ticket of stopping the Article 50 process. The second is where the negotiations are going so badly for the UK that shortly before the end of the 2-year period the UK government decides it wants to stop the process. Can this be done?
