Soulmate Marks and Bond Sickness

Soulmate marks are basically tattoos, and the image will vary from person to person but maintain a sort of theme between partners (if I remember right Nic, Resin and Filick's marks are all time pieces and feathers). In the case of polyamory, each person will have one mark for each partner they have. (ex. Nic, Filick and Resin are a closed triad so each member has two soulmate marks, one for each partner. However in the case of Flynns relationships, he shares a soulmate mark with his girlfriend Zoe, but neither he nor Zoe share a mark with Flynns wife Ibis)

The marks are given to all Earth-born and the avian people from Deletas by Love

Marks don't appear until every partner is over 18 and appears dull and grayed out.

The marks start to become solid as a relationship develops

Marks (typically) turn silver if one partner dies

The sirens from Deletas and the Fae in Hapaleon do not receive marks.

Notable exceptions:

Resin was built with the intention to seal a (Venom like) entity called Bellatrix away when populations started increasing. Her purpose was, and is, to keep him from running loose. Her marks function kinda like a lock on his metaphorical prison. If the mark breaks (from Bond sickness), Bellatrix goes free.

Nic eventually receives his marks after Resin’s original mark breaks

Atlas, Flynn and Willa are all sirens, but they were born on Earth so they get marks

Weston never receives a mark

Bond Sickness

Bond sickness is when when a soulmate mark is corrupted, usually by toxic dynamics.

Known Instances of Bond Sickness

In Resin's case, her mark(s) were made out of demands, not naturally and as a result Love put a stipulation that she and her partners have to be absolutely faithful. Any romantic-intentioned touching caused the sickness to start and spread. As a result, even though Filick had been long dead, Resin was harmed initially as she and Nic developed feelings for each other.

Arrack got it because of Willa's constant abuse and cheating

Maxis got it because of his mate's double-life and also cheating

The most common kinds of people to get it are human-paranornal relationships where the human doesn't know or care that bad behavior has literal consequences, and paranormal-warlock because warlocks DGAF

Warlocks Explanation

Where warlocks came from:

Reaper stupidity lol

Humanity is a learned behavior, and it took a long time for the reapers to learn that there are some things that shouldn't be done. Basically, at some point the reapers came across a village of mages that they were friends with dead, and fucked around enough to bring them back to life--but wrong. The reanimated mages were the first warlocks

Warlocks themselves aren't evil, but in order to survive they have to live off of the energy of souls. In order to get it, they create Fullmetal Alchemist-type chimeras so that they can feed off of the mashed up souls. Living that kind of life made them resentful and greedier for turning every other living thing into a food source

The chimeras are built to deteriorate while alive. As they deteriorate, they give off the energy that the warlocks need

The warlocks grew greedy and resentful more because they were jealous of other living species. If they do not corrupt and fuck up souls by making chimeras, then they will suffer agonizing pain and die an awful death.

Other species can live normally, but they have to live by siphoning off of everyone else, and it made them jealous and resentful. They were made by servants of the gods who cannot help them, which only made it worse and made many warlocks turn to killing for pleasure to spite the gods

Warlocks hold the most anger towards the reapers, but are pissed at the gods for allowing their servants to create them in the first place

The war starts when Sonja builds a following of those who hate the gods/god servants/magic in general.

A couple notable exceptions being Sui, a “perfect” chimera who is generally good (tho he pretty much hates everyone around him) and Marius, a “good” warlock and his creations

The temperament of the chimeras is in part based on the effort put into making them. The more souls put in, the harder it is to make them and the more powerful the creature. 100 is the magic number for all of those souls to fuse and become something else entirely. It has only been managed once and killed both warlocks that were making Sui

Marius is a warlock on the "good" side who uses his powers and science to make the chimeras more stable. Instead of mixing and matching random beings, he uses gene editing and his love of fossils as bases to create chimeras from stem cells

A chimera usually has visible stitch marks from pieces being taken out of other beings and mashed together. Marius refuses to do that and instead grows something new from consentually gathered tissue samples--leading to minimally damaged souls. It is an energy inefficient process so he is quite physically weak, but it means that his creations live natural lives
