random soulmark thoughts...
In a world of soulmates, most people are born with a soulmark, a shared symbol somewhere on the body and totally unique to that couple. On rare occasions, these marks only show up years later and for a number of different reasons.
The most common reason is an injury.
No one know why it happens like this but the popular theory is that these two soulmates are usually independent types (or at least one of them is) and didn't need a soulmate until suffering through a traumatic event.
So imagine that Y/N didn't have a mark until one night...
Jason Todd's soulmate collapses with a blinding headache in the middle of the street, in so much pain she can't even scream, just shaking violently, heart thundering in her chest, it hurts, it hurts, everything hurts. Falling unconscious, she awakes in the hospital three weeks later with her soulmark:
A thin line from the corner of her lips to her ear.
Simple. Clean. A little crooked. It sparkles with a iridescent shimmer, everyone tells her how pretty that it. And yet it aches all of the time, the pain only lessening when she draws closer and closer to something...
Dick Grayson's soulmate that feels the snapping of a bone that doesn't belong to her, jolting out of bed with a scream as she clutches her arm. The pain lasts only for a moment, just a moment...and when she finally composes herself, she sees it:
A little swirl that makes out something like a bird, flying just above the inside of her elbow. People in her life debate on what kind of bird it is, a sparrow, perhaps, a hawk or a songbird, maybe a canary...but, for some reason that she cannot explain, she's always thought of it as a robin.
Conner Kent's soulmate feels it while studying late one night...the sudden force of being thrown into something, air forced from her lungs and pain ripping through her. Everything aches but most of all, it's her ribs, her spine, her entire back on fire with an invisible, throbbing bruise.
It doesn't show up right away.
Instead the mark slowly grows over time as the pain subsides, something you can't make sense of, nobody can, the silver writing unlike anything you've ever seen. It's clearly a written language, a symbol for something, but, whatever it is and whatever it says, no one knows. It won't be until years later that you learn the Kryptonian word for love...
side thought: Con ends up finding his soulmate when somebody takes a picture of her soulmark while she's at the beach (because in a world with both internet and soulmarks, you KNOW people take pics of them all the time, there's whole forums and accounts dedicated to soulmarks, some shared willing by people looking for a match and others taken secretly of strangers) and it goes viral with everyone trying figure out what it means.
Roy Harper's soulmate has been feeling strange for some time now. Nightmares haunt her through the night, flashes of things that don't make any sense.
A cold place...the rhythmic beeping of a monitor...faces moving in blurs, voices murmuring...a heartbeat...But one night, those strange dreams become pain in her arm, deep and burning and bloody, her bloodless wound aching as she screams out. For years, the pain never truly subsides and a deep, bloody red band is imprinted around her arm, a soulmark.
It never changes. The pain aches quietly.
Until one day, years later, the pain suddenly ceases when she bumps into a young man on the street.
Kaldur'ahm's soulmate wakes up in the middle of the night when she feels something slash across her chest, the ice cold touch of metal. But there's nothing there. No wounds, no blood, nothing until she turns on the light and watches as a mark slowly, gently appears.
It's strange and pretty, an intricate design of swirls and spheres and lines, everything coming together to create a pretty picture. No one can really agree on what it is because, from and different angle, it looks like something else. One way it looks like the moon over the ocean, another way it looks like a flurry of stars, another still it almost looks like a mountain, all of it with a blue glow to it, the light waxing and waning for no reason.
Later, she will learn that this is an Atlantian art form, many pictures hidden within one another, and one of Kal's favorites.
Wally West's soulmate thinks it's kind of silly...most people in her position talk about excruciating pain and what they learn later on was a serious injury, but her's wasn't anything like that.
It was just a moment of pain.
A brief, flickering little moment that felt as though something that cut her cheekbone, just to the left of her face beneath her eye. So brief and so subtle that she didn't even think anything of it. It wasn't until she got home late and started getting ready for bed that she saw it:
A little heart just where that pain had been, smiling at her reflection as she touched it softly. It zaps with static, something that happens from time to time, feeling almost electric randomly.
(Icicle Jr. hit him in the face and later Wally thanks him for helping him find his soulmate ♡♡♡)
Victor Stone's soulmate can't move. She can't speak or scream, crying silently as pain rips through her entire body. Dying...is she dying? Is she bleeding, broken, burning, all of the things she feels and yet...there's nothing but endless pain.
No one has ever seen soulmarks like hers.
They are expansive, covering most of her body, save for a few bare patches left alone. It looks almost like...tech. A neat maze of lines and circles, all of them with an strange sheen to them, the color changing in the light, sometimes purple or red, before finally becoming blue and staying that way. And her left eye glimmers red at times...
