UFC Fight Night Highlights: Kelvin Gastelum vs Brian Melancon
Perpetual underdog Kelvin Gastelum is ready to fight after being sidelined with an injury. After winning TUF 17 and beating Melancon, Gastelum looks to upset hard-hitting wrestler Rick Story. The fight goes down on Saturday (March 15th) on the prelims for UFC 171.

Defining the pivotal moments in Brian Melancon’s career
Houston MMA representative retires prematurely but not before accomplishing his UFC goal
The world celebrates those who do as they say they are going to do and today the Houston MMA Community celebrates one of their own in Brian Melancon.
A UFC fighter and veteran of Houston-based Legacy FC, Brian Melancon officially announced his retirement yesterday due to medical issues. He was scheduled to fight TUF: Smashes winner Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 33 next month on Dec. 7 in Australia. That would have marked his third fight for the UFC after going 1-1 so far with a win over Seth Baczynski and loss to Kelvin Gastelum but alas, it was not to be.
Brian Melancon issued the following statement via his Facebook account:
“It has been announced, I am sad to say that my fight career is over. I have been having kidney problems that have gotten much worse recently and just found out that my kidney function has dropped to 47%. If I continue to train, fight, and cut weight then I run the risk of permanent damage. I have been advised by my Specialist to retire and move on and that is what I will be doing. This is not how I wanted to go out, but I have to believe that God has another path for me. Thanks to all of you who supported me throughout my career.”
Despite the fact that he’ll no longer be an active fighter, Brian will always be remembered in the cage as a ferocious competitor who did everything he could to compete and win. 5 out of his 7 career wins came by finish and there was never a moment in any of his fights that was not exciting.
With a stated number-one goal of making it to the UFC ever since he started training with Saul Soliz at Metro Fight Club over five years ago, Melancon did everything he could to get to the highest level of MMA. That included a switch to Paradigm Training Center (alongside longtime teammates Jeff Rexroad, Mike Bronzoulis, etc.) after his old team went on hiatus and some brutal cuts to 155 lbs. for fights earlier on in his career that were brutal; something evident in his current medical condition. Be that as it may, he was never afraid to make the sacrificed he thought were necessary to succeed.
Working full-time managing physical therapy clinics, Brian got the call to accomplish his ultimate dream of fighting for the world’s undisputed #1 MMA organization earlier on this year. He debuted as a underdog to “Polish Pistola” Seth Baczynski at UFC 162. Prior to their fight Seth was a 4-1 UFC vet and touted to be one of the up-and-coming welterweights for the organization. Melancon was supposed to be cannon-fodder to the prospect but shocked the pundits with a first round knockout of Baczynski that had Joe Rogan and others likening him to MMA great Fedor Emelianenko.
He went on to fight once more, losing by submission in a valiant effort versus Kelvin Gastelum but ultimately that rousing performance versus Seth Baczynski will now become the defining moment of his career – the moment where he accomplished a dream despite all odds, the exact moment in time where he did what he said he was going to do from the outset and where he forever defined himself as a man of his word.
Brian Melancon – Career Chronology
Jan. 2009 – Started his pro career, winning TKO over Adrian Barco at URC 3.
May 2010 – After 3 wins, fought Adam Schindler at Bellator 20, losing by decision.
July 2010 – Signed with Legacy FC, debuting with a TKO win over Todd Moore.
Jan. 2011 – Defeated Derrick Krantz by decision at Legacy FC 5.
June 2011 – Signed with Strikeforce – drops disputed decision to Isaac Vallie-Flagg.
Sept. 2011 – Wins a unanimous decision over Felipe Portela in last Strikeforce fight.
Jan. 2013 – Strikeforce officially folded into the UFC; Concentrates on physical therapy career.
July 2013 – Debuts as huge underdog to Seth Baczynski at UFC 162; Wins by KO.
Aug. 2013 – Loses to Kelvin Gastelum by submission at UFC Fight Night 27
Oct. 2013 – Booked to take on TUF winner Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 33
Nov. 2013 – Announces retirement due to medical issues (kidney) on Nov. 20.
Thank u all for your 4 the support, but kidney problems have ended my fight career.
It sucks that he was never able to train full time because he could have been a really good lightweight. Terrible when injuries and health problems cut a fighter's career short.

UFC Fight Night 27 Results – Condit beats Kampmann; Dos Anjos corrals Cerrone
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, August 29, 2013 – Welterweight Carlos Condit began his comeback tour last night in Indianapolis in the main event of UFC Fight Night 27 with a win over Martin Kampmann. The two had previously faced off in April 2009 with Kampmann earning the split decision over “Natural Born Killer” in his first UFC fight following his long stint in the WEC. With consecutive losses to Johny Hendricks and champion Georges St. Pierre heading into this bout, it was crucial that Condit find success and he did just that in the fourth with pinpoint combinations forcing the referee stoppage over a bloodied Kampmann.
In the co-main event of the evening Donald Cerrone (like Condit, also from Jackson’s MMA) did not do as well in falling victim to a streaking lightweight divisional contender in Rafael dos Anjos. The Brazilian opened the bout aggressively and took control with his striking in this oen while “Cowboy” was mostly content trying to attack from his guard to no avail. With the win, Dos Anjos is now coming dangerously close to knocking on the door of top title contender status in the crowded 155 lbs. division currently ruled by champion Benson Henderson, who takes on Anthony Pettis at UFC 164 this coming Saturday in defense of his title.
Texas vets drop bouts – Brian Melancon bested by Kelvin Gastelum; Takeya Mizugaki decisions Erik Perez; McDaniel losses to Brad Tavares
Gutsy Houstonian Brian Melancon (Paradigm Training Center) fell victim to a streaking fighter in TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night 27. It seemed like Gastelum was almost a bigger version of him with his aggression in this one. The TUF vet pressed the action from the get-go with a double-leg takedown attempt (that was defended well by Melancon) and he didn’t stop from there immediately moving forward with a few punch combinations that found their mark. A left, right, uppercut series dropped Brian and the 21 year old prospect Gastelum jumped on him right away to take the rear-naked choke for the win.
Earlier on in the evening former McAllen-based (RGV) standout Erik “Goyito” Perez dropped a close split decision to Takeya Mizugaki in their bout. Both fights had their moments in this one but it was Mizugaki who edged things out with a few stiff counter right hands that bloodied Goyito’s nose along with some superior grappling in the third.
Likewise Wichita Falls, Texas native Bubba McDaniel dropped his first official UFC bout to Brad Tavares following seven official wins in a row.
Court McGee earns second straight win over Robert Whittaker
Rounding out the main card on FOX Sports 1, TUF Smashes winner Robert Whittaker was unable to build on the momentum of his last win over Colton Smith in his fight versus another TUF winner in Court McGee at UFC Fight Night 27. Whittaker’s boxing was on point early in this one but McGee just kept walking forward in trademark fashion to earn his points en route to the decision win.

UFC Fight Night 27 - Brian Melancon ready for Kelvin Gastelum
By TXMMA Staff | Photo: UFC.com, Zuffa LLC via Getty Images
Houston’s Brian Melancon looking to make UFC ride last as long as he can; Faces TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum tonight at UFC Fight Night 27
INDIANAPOLIS, IND – Houston’s Brian Melancon (7-2, Paradigm Training Center) steps into the UFC cage for the second time tonight when he takes on TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum (6-0) as part of the UFC Fight Night 27 event scheduled for the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Following a career spent largely in the Legacy Fighting Championship and the now defunct Strikeforce promotion, Melancon hopes to follow up on his original dream to fight in the octagon just a single time.
“The difference is now my goals have been accomplished and all the sacrifices have been validated. I always knew I belonged and just wanted to prove it, and now I believe I have. I am just enjoying the ride now for however long it lasts.”
Surprising many the first time around by blasting and beating heavy favorite Seth Baczynski by first round knockout at UFC 162 this past July, it seems Brian Melancon may be around for much longer than he originally anticipated.
If he beats Kelvin Gastelum a 10th Planet Purple Belt and winner of The Ultimate Fighter 17, expectations will be raised even higher for the career physical therapist.
“I think Kelvin is a tough, well rounded opponent coming off a great win where he was an underdog like I was,” Brian says about his opponent. “I watched some of his fights and think he has good hands and footwork and he tries to keep you guessing with his takedowns. Similar to some of the things I do.”
At 5’9” Gastelum is also a big change from Melancon’s last opponent who stood talla t 6’3”.
“His (Gastelum’s) body type is similar but I face all different types in training and have in fights as well so I don’t think it matters either way. You have to be ready for everything.”
And ready he is.
Make sure to tune in LIVE to FOX Sports 1 at 8PM EST / 9PM Central to watch Kelvin Gastelum vs. Brian Melancon this evening.

Brian Melancon Replaces Paulo Thiago; Faces Kelvin Gastelum in Second UFC Bout
HOUSTON, TX, July 23, 2013 – Looks like it will be a quick turnaround for UFC welterweight Brian Melancon, a Bayou City native fighting out of Paradigm Training Center South Rice Avenue.
The 5’8″ power puncher made hs UFC debut just earlier this month at the July 6th UFC 162 event in Vegas on the undercard of Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman 1. Despite being a huge underdog he was able to make his presence known by knocking out highly-touted opponent Seth Bacynski, drawing post-fight comparisons to MMA great Emelianenko Fedor in terms of his fighting style.
Speaking to him just last week, he was excited to continue his UFC year but did not know quite when he would get the call. He was hoping for the UFC 166 event headlined by Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos 3 set for Houston this October but that was not to be. Instead he’ll be making his octagon return much sooner when he takes on Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2, August 28th in Indianapolis. He’ll be replacing the injured Paulo Thiago on the card and will be looking for his third win in a row against The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 season winner.
Here’s the entire card for UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampann 2 as it stands today.
Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann Donald Cerrone vs. Rafael dos Anjos Kelvin Gastelum vs. Brian Melancon Sarah Kaufman vs. Sara McMann Court McGee vs. Robert Whittaker
