Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Brian Rogers
A tremendous athlete and excellent student, Brian was Dick Grayson’s college roommate at Gotham State University. He was the star quarterback of the school's football team wherein Brain was heralded as a ‘one-man offense.’ Indeed it was looking quite likely that the young man would be drafted to play football at the professional level, possibly even the number draft pick with a highly lucrative signing bonus.
Knowing that there would be numerous professional scouts attending the upcoming match with Gotham Tech, Brain was very nervous about the game. Yet Dick assured him that he would do fine. Brian received an odd telegram wishing him luck. Unbeknownst to Brian and Dick, the telegram was laced with a microscopic compound concocted by Jonathan Crane, the villain known as the Scarecrow. The compound, entered the body and, when mixed with increased adrenaline, it generated terrifying hallucinations and debilitating panic attacks.
The Scarecrow had dosed numerous star athletes in this fashion, resulting in their buckling under the anxiety and losing important matches. The Scarecrow had placed large gambling wagers against them and ended up winning a great deal of money.
Dick was also affected by the compound in that he handled the telegram as well. When he started experiencing the hallucinogenic effects, he and Batman were ultimately able to ferret out The Scarecrow’s plan. The Scarecrow was eventually defeated and though Brian faired poorly in his outing against Gotham Tech, the public was made aware of how he and the other athletes had been affected by the Scarecrow’s actions.
Brian ended up drafted in the first round and went on to become the starting quarterback for the Gotham Knights professional football squad. Actor Brian Mitchell provided the voice for the character, appearing in the nineteenth episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Fear of Victory.’
