Loving this new piece by the AGO: Couch Monster: Sadzěʔ yaaghęhch’ill (2022) by Brian Jungen. Brian is of both European and Indigenous heritage but what I love about this piece is that you don’t really need to know that about him to enjoy this particular piece. Inspired by the tossed away furniture that litters the surrounding area and the story of Jumbo, a captive circus elephant that was hit by a train in St. Thomas, ON in 1885, it holds a pretty universal reading of being a trapped living soul and tossed away like trash. Mimicking the previous Henry Moore sculpture that sat at the same location for years (now moved to the nearby and newly renovated Grange Park), this artist clearly did his research and knows his audience, using the stuff of the community to communicate within itself, with of course the added touch of the classic Jungen twist 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 🐘 #brianjungen #ago #artreview #publicart #henrymoore #jumbo #toronto #torontoart #grangepark #artcritic https://www.instagram.com/p/CfiNx0HtYZK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
First 2 images from Alert Bay; then sketch from the Jungen show. Our BC adventure took us to the community of Alert Bay - on a small island off the NE shore of Vancouver Island. I found the place amazing: the First Nations community’s resistance to the potlatch ban; how they have fought for the ongoing vitality of their culture. The totem pole is from a site with quite a number of poles, both standing and on the ground. The site is treated as sacred, honouring their ancestors, and visitors can only view from the perimeter. • The bear mask is from their cultural centre, which is not a museum, for the masks continue to be worn at certain times. The labels on the regalia would describe the date of making etc, like a museum would, but then mentions who in the community owns or wears that item. I felt a real sense of living continuity. • Then the Brian Jungen mask, made from Nike Air Jordans. Intermixing history and contemporary, sacred and commerce.... #brianjungen #alertbay #westcoastart #indigenousart #contemporaryart #totempole #masks #airjordan #sketchbook (at Alert Bay, British Columbia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1lxtxAATQO/?igshid=116a5tv8sojh4
Happy we saw this show before it disappears tomorrow. #brianjungen #ago https://www.instagram.com/p/B1jvKLKArANpF5BG--GIKoCtWzsmLTE49q-0NY0/?igshid=12kwzdi48zzrd
Mesmerizing, troubling, compelling. Constructed from those ubiquitous stacking plastic chairs —- cut, bolted together, with such rhythm and invention. Jungen makes this ocean creature out of plastics. The fragility of nature meets the fossil-fuel driven anthropocene. • • #brianjungen #whales #skeletons #anthropocene #plasticocean #canadianart (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1gU6zuADg2/?igshid=kwkh9peq1p0q
Love the set of jerry cans by Brian Jungen! Beautiful patterns mess with the distribution of fossil fuels! I feel gratitude for the First Nations protestors who have been protecting their land from pipeline expansion. The clash of values in this piece says so much. • • #brianjungen #contemporaryart #stopfossilfuels #canadianart #foundobjectart #toronto #patterns (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1duBiAgn-7/?igshid=o56uqamuhhgr
After our trip to BC, especially powerful to explore the work of Brian Jungen. Brought three youth along for the ride. Here, one of Jungen’s “Prototypes for New Understanding” —- west coast masks made from Nike shoes! #brianjungen #canadianart #nikeshoes #indigenousart (at AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1cYWd-gjgd/?igshid=1rrqmn9b2qq4r
