The Murder of Holly Jones
Holly Maria Jones was a 10-year-old girl from Toronto, Canada. She was a shy girl with three older siblings. Holly was imaginative and musical with dreams of becoming a famous singer.
On 13th May 2003 at around 6 pm, Holly was walking a friend home after they had played together. When Holly failed to return home her parents reported her missing and an Amber Alert was issued.
It was later found that while Holly was walking she happened to pass the house of Michael Briere, a software developer and was never seen again. Briere abducted Holly, sexually assaulted her and strangled her before dismembering her body and discarding it in the Toronto Harbour. The remains were found the next day by a dog walker, the corpse was quickly identified as Holly.
Law enforcement began a program for voluntary DNA collection from men in the area. Briere was one of the few who refused to provide a DNA sample which made officers suspicious, he was put under surveillance and obtained a DNA sample when he left saliva on a drink can he threw in a public bin. Carpet fibres from the carpet in his apartment were also matched to fibres found on Holly's body. Briere's DNA matched blood found under Holly's fingernails.
Briere was arrested and charged with murder, he pleaded guilty and blamed his actions on viewing child pornography, stated he watched it and then happened to walk outside just as Holly went past his house. He made a quick and impulsive decision to kidnap her. He received an automatic life sentence.

Not all psychological impacts can be encompassed by a list of symptoms or disorders. Trauma can alter the very meaning we give to our lives and can produce feelings and experiences that are not easily categorized in diagnostic manuals. These more existential impacts can include a loss of meaning in life, a sense of being alone in the world, a realization of the fragility of life and the reality of death, loss of connection with one’s spirituality or morality, and disruption in one’s ability to hope, trust, or care about oneself or others.
