Lavan Firestorm and Kalira: He lights things on fire with his mind, she's an angelic Companion sent to help him control his powers because they're too strong. None of that is odd for the setting. And canonical soulmates are common in this setting. The fact that Companions always show up looking like a beautiful white horse, however, makes the fact that the two of them are soulmates RATHER ODD.

Alice Tonner and Basira Hussai : - ACAB allegory but also toxic doomed yuri - Codependency through the roof - “Yes I know she’s a literal monster and an embodiment of the primal fear of being hunted by a predator, *and* I’d be a total hypocrite for excusing her bad behavior, but have you considered: I love her?” -Bassira Hussein, probably - They’re so unhealthy for each other and it takes the literal apocalypse for one of them to realize it

Since it's Ace Week I thought I'd talk about one of my favorite books, Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey, in which the main protagonist, Lavan, is AroAce. <3

Here's part of the write-up from the cover flap:

Lavan presents as AroAce because he is Lifebonded (think Soulmates only stronger) to his Companion, Kalira (the shiny white horselike being in the picture above), so he has no interest in romance or sex, all of his emotional needs are fulfilled by Kalira. The fact that he's AroAce isn't jammed into your face in this book, with the exception of one small scene when a potential love interest needs to be smucked upside the head and told why he's not interested lol. It's very well written and a lovely book in general. IT WILL ALSO RIP YOUR HEART OUT, TEAR IT TO PIECES AND THEN STOMP ON THOSE PIECES. Fair warning. I cried so hard near the end of this book that I couldn't even keep reading. I had to take a minute. =/

Really, people, just go read the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey. They're so inclusive and heartwarming and tragic. You won't regret it. <3
