I recently found a weird little 5” Flexidisc from 1984, interviewing new wave frontman turned avant garde composer David Sylvian. The flexi was apparently given away with a Japanese magazine, VivaRock, and is from around the release of Sylvian’s most poppy/accessible solo album, the classic Brilliant Trees. I ran the photo through Google Translate, so you can read the record’s text in the second photo.

David Sylvian’s “Brilliant Trees” album is one of my all-time favorite records—a beguiling mix of jazz, world music and avant-garde pop that is often pretentious but makes up for it through its sheer ambition. So I ordered this single from it on Discogs; the music remains great and it’s interesting to see how they tried to market such non-top 40 music, with a fold-out sleeve and photography by Anton Corbijn, best known for his shots of U2 and Depeche Mode. It is cool, but I wish it wasn’t so beat up; the seller listed it as VG+ and that’s clearly not the case.
