Shot Down In Flames

Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba, the airline became a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems.

Pan Am was forced to declare bankruptcy on January 8, 1991.

In sharing the shame and blame of the December 1991 demise of Pan American World Airways, some say that the company's long slide started with founder Juan Terry Trippe, viewed by many as arrogant in conducting business and who never planned for a qualified, long-term. Others argue that the company's downfall came from more fundamental causes, such as poor management, deregulation, unions, apathy etc.

The U.S. government's refusal to allow Pan Am a connecting domestic-route network during the late 1940s -- at a time when domestic-based Trans World Airways and numerous blossoming foreign carriers were awarded international route authority over routes most of which Pan Am had pioneered -- started the beginning of the end.

Then came the era of repeated international terrorist attacks against U.S. policy overseas, often targeting Pan Am directly and culminating in the 1988 Clipper 103 disaster.

You are given the task of reviving the said airline. You are required to draft a report of 15-17 pages and come up with a detailed revival plan for Pan AM, including the following-

Identify Problems that led to failure of the airline

Strategies to rectify the problems (Give an action-wise plan)

Explain which carrier you are choosing (LCC or Full Service) along with the reasons for selection.

The major profitable routes Intra-USA your airline would indulge in (provided the required licenses have been granted)

Use of major international routes (with help of a Map)

Differentiation strategies (new features for the service you are offering)

Marketing Strategies (Conventional & Unconventional)

Exit strategy

Sources of fund, and Projected revenue
