These calendula seedlings are great examples of plants that would likely have been grown in the 1704 House’s kitchen garden during the 18th century. Calendula, also known today as English marigold, was grown for medicinal use in colonial American gardens, to create an ointment for wounds and stings. It is still grown in many gardens today for its beautiful and edible flowers.
