5 facts about Bertrand Russell

This June, the OUP Philosophy team honors Bertrand Russell as their Philosopher of the Month. Below are five interesting facts about the great British philosopher. All facts below are taken from Oxford Reference Online: 

1. Bertrand Russell was arrested and jailed twice for political activism—once in 1918, and again in 1961.

2. Russell’s son Conrad was named after novelist Joseph Conrad.

3. Russell’s grandfather, John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, twice served as Queen Victoria’s Prime Minister.

4. Russell’s parents died when he was very young, and he was raised by his grandmother, Lady Russell.

5. Russell’s Autobiography caused a stir by its selective frankness, and by the rather unattractive picture it conveyed of the great man's tardy yet intense emotional development.
