I discovered something called "sticky toffee pudding" in a fabulous dessert cookbook I have that is written by an American woman who went to Le Courdon Bleu in London. The book is called "Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey," by Jill O'Connor. The recipe appears on page 61, where 0'Connor says that "When I lived in London, this deliciously sweet, moist, date-speckled cake, covered in a thick, warm layer of butterscotch-toffee sauce, was a fixture on almost every English 'pudding' menu." (From what I hear, pudding in the U.K. refers to many kinds of desserts, not just what we Americans think of as pudding, which is basically flavored custard.)
