Advent Drabble 5 - Christmas Pudding

“I think,” says John, “that it’s a bad idea.”

“Of course it’s a bad idea,” Mycroft agrees drily.

Sherlock keeps fiddling around with his creation. “You always want me to be more festive. You always ask me to participate more in the family traditions.”

“I don’t ask that,” Mycroft denies. “Mother asks that.”

“And now I have finally taken an interest in the Christmas festivities.”

“Yes, but the Christmas festivity in question is lighting the pudding on fire,” John points out. “Using a special compound you developed yourself.”

“It’s a little experiment.” Sherlock shrugs. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

The twelfth day of Solstice

The Mechanicsburg Solstice Festival, that is!

This is the second of three OT3-themed wallpapers that will be part of the "Solstice Series". This one is dated 2013 and is titled "Christmas Pudding". I believe this drawing was only released as a wallpaper, so it may be new to many of you.

It portrays the dessert (or pudding) course of an intimate dinner for three, and seems to hark back to an early period in the evolution of the OT3, based on Gil's grim expression and the poison test kit under his chair. (Not to mention his death grip on the wine glass he hasn't yet relinquished.) Appropriately enough, Tarvek's Sparky confectionary creation is electrified, rather than flaming.

British Idioms Stir Up Sunday

In November, there is a tradition of the family taking time to gather in the kitchen and join in as the Christmas Pudding is made. There is an actual date- this year it's the 23rd of November, which is the last Sunday before Advent.

The day does not actually get its name from ‘stirring the pudding’: it gets its name from the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer. The Collect of the Day for the last Sunday before Advent starts, “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people”.

However since Victorian times it has become associated with the rather lovely family custom of preparing for Christmas together by making the Christmas pudding, an essential part of most British Christmas dinners. Each member of the family is supposed to give the mixture a stir, making a secret wish.

Last year, we made TWO Christmas puddings, one to eat in 2024, and the other left to "mature" for another year, which we will eat this Christmas.

For us, Stir Up Sunday happened yesterday when we made the Christmas Cake.

This is "naked" cake! It is wrapped in grease-proof paper and foil, then put in an air-tight tin, to be kept in a cool, dark place (never refrigerated).

By Christmas, it will have been "fed" a dose of sherry every ten days, then wrapped in marzipan, and iced in the final week before Christmas.
