Almost a year ago I wrote a dndads fic wherein I needed to figure out the American term for a Granny Annexe, and today from dndads itself I discover the phrase is just "back house".
As in, the house round the back. God, it's so simple. How did this not occur to me?
The anonymity of fanfic is so funny. You'll be reading along and suddenly the term "flat" or "a bit shit" hits you in the face and it's like "ah. A Brit."

(for anyone unfamiliar with british slang from 20 years ago, this roughly means "ugly inconsiderate people", rates pretty low on the sweary scale, and is just... a bit of an odd combination of words, which is what gives it the air of "well... you're a poo-poo head!")
Dear non-Brits: you can't use the phrase 'sod it' to mean the same as 'goddamn it'. It means the same as 'fuck it'.
More precisely, fuck it in the ass.
