Exchanging, eating and playing various competitive games with Easter eggs is a popular custom in Britain. In the UK before they were replaced by chocolate Easter eggs real eggs were used. The eggs were hard-boiled and dyed in various colors and patterns. The traditionally bright colours represented spring and light. On the 5th of November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires. This tradition has lasted till present days when we light bonfires and fireworks on that day.
