Though Chris wasn’t paying attention to the coloring book, he was paying more attention to the moving hands around him, his little fingers trying to copy the motions he watched his daddy make.

“He has 30 seconds to start breathing on his own, otherwise the ventilator comes back.” The doctor explained as Buck and Eddie hovered around Tommy’s hospital bed. “If he doesn’t breathe on his own, we’ll turn the ventilator back on and come up with a new plan for him.” With the ventilator off, the countdown began. Buck and Eddie clung to one another as they watched Tommy’s chest, hopeful to see it rise and fall on its own. “C’mon Tommy, breathe for us please.” Buck said quietly, tears streaming down his face. “You need to breathe baby.” Eddie chimed in, his hand reaching out for Tommy’s. The conscious duo could only hold their own breaths as they waited.
