So, I caught up on a lot of Venom comics recently!! There sure are a few good, soft fellas who ended up super dead, as comic book heroes do. So now it is time for Eddie Brock to go break Flash Thompson out of Hell so they can go save their symbiote together, right? Right?? RIGHT???

It’s All Too Real unfortunately.

did exit wounds ben ever think that he _loved_ reed or did he only find out because reed "died"
first: bless you and bless your whole house for asking me something like this
second: STRAP YOURSELVES IN PEOPLE I’M ABOUT TO LAY IT DOWN
we should probably start this discussion off by looking at what I guess is the Money Segment for part 1
You loved him, something says inside his head, a hundred listens in. Ben thinks, I know.
No, it says, you loved him.
He feels like he’s been hollowed out and left to rot.
so this is veering Dangerously close to being director’s commentary outright, but I guess what I wanted people to take away from this exchange is that division between “loved” and “loved.” ben thinks “I know” in response to the former because ben already knew he loved reed. that’s been in play since before reed left for baxter to begin with. a few years at least. like, reed is probably the most important person in ben’s universe, and that’s just kind of standard for ben by now? it’s not something he questions or even thinks about all that often because it’s always been there. they’ve been part of each other’s lives for so long, it just makes sense. of course ben loves reed.
but then there’s “loves” in contrast to “loves” and that’s something more complicated on all counts. like, that’s the difference between loving someone and being IN love with someone. and I’d say that ben’s been on the edge of this realization for a little while, this idea that for him, loving reed and being in love with reed are inextricably tied up in each other. because loving reed in the romantic sense really does nothing to change the platonic love that was already in play, it just adds a new dimension to it. the platonic love provides a complication because ben 100% doesn’t want to jeopardize this relationship they already have as friends. because he loves reed, so he doesn’t want being in love with reed to mess that up.
so any time before reed’s death - shoot, any time before reed even went to baxter and the possibility of them growing apart/reed no longer needing ben arrived on the table - if ben ever stumbled upon part of that realization, he absolutely buried it and refuse to acknowledge it further. straightup wouldn’t admit to himself that he might be in love with reed because reed’s friendship was too important to him.
and reed’s death eliminates that issue in the cruelest way possible, because ben can’t ruin something that technically no longer exists. so this time, when he reaches that usual place of almost-knowing, he allows himself to go through with it - thinks, “I loved him” then “I loved him” because ben being in love with reed is no longer a threat to anything, it’s just a very sad fact that he’s properly accepting for the first time.
to sum up: ben was almost definitely in love with reed before the accident, but it took reed’s death for him to really come to terms with the idea.
(and a sidenote in the same vein: take a gander at reed’s drunk voicemails. ben might not be the only one on the edge of a revelation.
exhibit A:
“…I really need you. To be here. For this. Also in general. But mostly for this…”
exhibit B:
“But I wish- I just want you to know- I really-You’re the one who got us here, you know? Nothing would’ve ever…nothing would’ve gone right. Not without you.”
