What Was The Shang Dynasty
The Shang dynasty was the earliest known Chinese ruling family. The dynasty governed from about 1766 BCE to about 1122 BCE. Its centre was in what is now known as the northern Henan Province. Shang society, though based on agriculture, became famous for its fine carvings and bronze work.
Most Shang relics found by archaeologists come from Anyang, a city with houses, palaces, temples and elaborate tombs. The people of the Shang period used bronze to make vessels, weapons and chariot fixtures. They also carved marble and jade and wove silk. The Shang kings were superstitious and consulted ‘oracle bones’ before making any important decisions.
The Shang writing system had more than 3,000 symbols. It appears on pieces of bone, silk and even turtle shells.
