A/N: So, I'm not even sure that Clint being a former carnie is canon in the MCU and I know S.H.I.E.L.D. was broken up in Captain America: The Winter Soldier but for the purpose of this story it's intact and ran by Director Nick Fury only. Anyway, enjoy! Part two coming soon as well as a possible third! Lmk in comments if you want me to add you to a taglist for future stories/imagines.
(I mean this kind of fits the story but not really.)
Third Person POV
As the young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent scribbles away at a paper, a small group of people enters the room in silence, all familiar with S.H.I.E.L.D. while also excited to meet who they hope will be a new recruit. Due to recent events, the Avengers had been contacted for a protection job and Clint, Natasha, Steve, and Tony have all come to retrieve the protectee.
Noticing the agent doesn't acknowledge their presence, Clint realizes, "Must not have the hearing aids in."
"Should someone get their attention?" Steve asks.
"Not unless you want to get punched in the face. The last agent to try and interfere with a drawing session ended up with a black eye," Fury responds.
Clint watches the agent with wonder, "How is training coming along?"
Fury grins with pride, "Surprisingly well, the acrobatics and gymnastics experience has proven beneficial in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts training."
"And weapons?"
"Jay's at least decent with everything in our weapons supply, seems to favor knives, though. Guns come in a close second."
As they continue observing the agent’s frantic movements, Steve begins to wonder, "Clint, how do you know so much about this agent?"
Natasha laughs, "You don't really think I was Clint's first stray, do you?" As Clint glares at her she continues, "I'm kidding, that’s his younger sibling."
Clint's face drops, "I had to leave Jay behind when I left the carnival. They were too young to even realize what Barney and I were protecting them from. They probably thought the carnival was literally all fun, games, and smiles. If I had brought them with me there's no telling what Barney would have done."
At the mention of his friend's murky past, Steve pats his shoulder, "I get it, man. You were protecting them."
Seeing a segue Fury stepped in, "Once Barton found a stable job here, he went back for Jay and brought them in to train."
If at all possible, it seems Clint's face saddens even more, "When I got to there, they'd been treated so badly that we had to have them go through therapy, before we could even think about training. I'm surprised Jay doesn't hate me for leaving."
Natasha steps forward to gently side hug her best friend, "Clint, you did what you thought was best. I think Jay is just happy to have their big brother back and to be safe."
Fury chuckles, "Damn right, keeps tabs on you, Barton. Jay is always keeping up to date with what you’re doing. They even check in on Laura and the kids every now and then."
Clint smiles, "I'm glad Jay’s doing better."
With this, Jay places the pen on the desk and seemingly admires the artwork. Clint reaches out to the light switch and flicks it off and immediately back on. Jay quickly turns to see who the intruder is while a switchblade appears in their hand, held ready to attack.
"Woah, Jay it's just me," Clint soothes.
The hand holding the knife drops to Jay’s side as they rake the other through their hair. They motion for the group to hold on a second and walks over to the bedside table. Once the hearing aids are back in their ears, Jay speaks up, "You have a lot of people with you," gesturing to Fury, Steve, and Natasha who stand just inside the door.
"I know, they're friends I promise. We sent the loud one to check on his headquarter tech upgrades so that he wouldn't alarm you too much," he laughs lightly.
Jay nods just as a black haired, goateed face pokes it's head over Steve's shoulder, "I'm offended, raise your hand if you think I'm really the loud one."
All hands go up as Steve responds, "Tony, you're the loudest one that came with us. I’ll give you that the loudest overall is most likely Thor."
Tony scoffs, "Rude."
Clint laughs as he pushes everyone out the door with Fury in tow. Jay sits quietly on the bed. Once they are left in silence, Clint returns to sit beside them.
"How are you doing? Fury says training is going really well," he speaks softly.
"Well, I'm okay, I think. The only problem is that as it gets closer to the anniversary of mom and dad's death, the more flashbacks I have. I usually catch them early and can anchor myself but I've had one unfortunate circumstance so far which ended in another agent getting a shiner. I didn't get to drawing in time and he didn't realize that I was having a flashback."
"Yeah, Fury told me about that. Are you staying clean still?"
"Yeah, I haven't hurt myself in well over three months. My therapist says it's the longest streak I have."
"That's good! I'm so proud of the progress you're making."
"Thanks," Jay mumbles as the rooms falls silent once more.
After a short moment, Clint speaks up again, "Listen, Fury called us because he thinks you'll be safer at the compound. The team would love to have you and it would be nice to get to hang out with you again."
Their oldest brother, Barney, was not in with the good guys so to speak. When he heard that Clint had brought Jay back from the carnival, he started to look for them. Three weeks ago, Jay received a text from an unknown number saying to meet them at a specific location if they wanted to see their brother again. Not knowing if it was Barney or Clint, Jay decided to go in case Clint was in trouble. Jay is smart and had Maria Hill follow at a distance in case anything went wrong and had a com-aid in one ear to communicate. The two barely made it back to HQ after Barney tried to convince Jay to join him and they refused. It was made clear that Jay needed to be better protected when Barney attacked S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters a week ago.
Clint continued, "I know it'll be a challenge for you since you've become used to this facility but if Barney decides he's stupid enough to try and attack a campus full of Avengers at least you'll be better protected."
Jay shook their head, "No you're right. Besides I need a change of scenery. After being in the carnival for so long and moving around so much, it's weird to be in one place doing the same things every day."
Clint perked up with excitement, "So you'll come?"
"Yeah," Jay laughed.
"In that case, why don't you come meet the others."
The siblings proceeded to make their way to the lounge area that Steve, Natasha, and Tony had found. Fury had gone on his merry way, mumbling something about needing to feed Goose.

Masterlist
(Gif belongs to @lokitty )
“Excuse you?” His eyebrows shot up.
“You’re Loki?”
“You weren’t listening,” Loki said this as more of a statement rather than a question. With shoulders dropped and looking as if he regretted talking to her at all, (y/n) huffed in a slight laugh at his demeanor.
“No! No, sorry I was, I was… it's just… well- “
“Spit it out mortal.” The distance between Loki and (y/n) growing smaller as he slowly advanced menacingly on her. Choosing actions over words, (y/n) turned her head to the side slowly, still unsure if he meant her harm but the thought quickly left her head. This was her soulmate, or so she thought, he wouldn’t do that... would he?
The distance between them was so short that if (y/n) were to reach her arm out just slightly, she’d be touching him and oh how she wanted to finally touch him. (Y/n) tucked her hair away from her ear and Loki seemed to step ever slightly closer to glance at what she was trying to show him.
A light touch fell behind her ear making (y/n) slightly jump, causing Loki to quickly retract his hand and cough lightly, coming to his senses.
“Why pray to ask, would you, a Midgardian, have my name in our ancient language behind your ear?” Loki looked at her in wonder, never seeing such a strange thing on a Midgardian.
Turning so fast that Loki barely had time to move back, suddenly they were face-to-face. Their noses almost touching and for once Loki could do nor say nothing. Looking down into (y/n)’s gaze, he felt ensnared within her eyes. Like her very sights would put him on the verge of madness and set him to go any lengths just to see her look at him that way again.
“Do you truly not know what…” Seeing Loki’s eyes watching hers softly, (y/n) knew that he had no idea what she was talking about but indeed felt something.
A thought suddenly struck her. Did Asgardians even get a soulmate tattoo? Oh god, her other half didn’t even know he had another half. Loki watched as her expression went from soft and caring to steel and slowly she moved backwards. Ripping himself away from petty thoughts, Loki’s manic smile returned, stalking towards (y/n) in a predator versus prey manner.
“No darling, what I’m more interested in is that small amount of power you seemed to possess, turning into the god of lies is not an easy task. Let alone for a mortal to perform such a trick. So, tell me, where do you hail from? Alfhiem? Asgard? Possibly even Svaltelhiem?”
“What?” (y/n) was so confused and distracted with the idea of her soulmate standing right in front of her, she’d almost forgotten the battle around her and the reason this had all occurred. Tripping over a rock behind her as she tried to back off even further, Loki caught her arm and pulled her into his chest.
“You’re not going anywhere darling, we’ve only just begun to have fun.” (y/n) began to struggle before suddenly freezing in place and Loki was almost worried for her sudden stillness.
When Loki grabbed her, sudden memories of Luke her grabby co-worker resurfaced, nobody touches her like this; soulmate or no. She was still that strong woman who didn’t need a soulmate.
Venom dripped from her words as her gaze slowly lifted from his chest to glare at Loki through her lashes. As he watched her, the amount of menace leaking of the small mortal astonished him. That entrapping gaze watched him through her lashes.
Her tone and mouth felt like honey as the words dripped from her mouth, it felt almost foreign, yet familiar.
“Release me, or I swear by all that is mighty I will tear you limb from limb. God or not, do not test me Loki because you will lose.” And Loki listened, much to the surprise of both parties. Something in Loki flickered like a flame, what he felt was…odd. Affection, shock, and pride, yet he also felt hatred; how dare a tiny human, a mortal, threaten a God like this!
She should be punished! Conflicting with himself, Loki said nothing else and grabbed (y/n) again, pulling her to him by her arm. Suddenly her vision was upside down as Loki carried her to his flying chariot. She needed to be studied, for Loki was too curious to let her go.
This woman had powers, she stood up to him and not to mention (y/n) had managed to speak in the mother tongue of Asgard, which no mortal had ever had the likes to hear or read about; so, how had she done so? It seemed she hadn’t realised it either.
(Y/n) thrashed around trying to get herself released, but nothing seemed to be working.
“Let me go, you absolute ass-wipe!” Loki let a smile slightly slip at the odd profanity, before masking it in time to settle her on the flying machine and set off.
“Oh, hell no!” (y/n) was suddenly sitting on the floor perfectly still and holding onto the railing, closing her eyes. He glanced down at her in a bored manner and (y/n) felt the fighting flame within her be extinguished. If there was one thing that terrified her most of all, it was heights.
Loki watched as her hatred seeped away, twisting into pure fear, making something within Loki squeeze. He didn’t like seeing it, but he could do nothing when he was so close to a soldier; not that he would have anyways.
‘I am a God I do not comfort petty girls who are afraid of heights.’ Shaking his head clear of the wondering thoughts, Loki’s senses tingled and luckily perfectly timed, he caught an arrow in his hand. Looking back to the archer, he seemed to be questioning these mortal’s intellect. An arrow versus a Go-
Before Loki could even finish the thought an explosion and he was thrown off the chariot. Strangely his first thoughts were not of where he was to land but rather what of the mortal? Landing, Loki rolled up instantly and glanced around to locate her and there is where he saw her.
Falling.
Loki’s heart hammered too fast to register and his mind flew in a thousand different directions. Yet, he could do nothing but scream “NO!” The curious being he’d failed to ask so many questions. To study her, learn her powers and possibly gain her on his side for the taking.
A red blurry object suddenly flew past the building Loki was situated upon and caught her. Breathing some sigh of relief, Loki stood and began trying to work out his problem with this mortal.
Why was he so affected by her? Was she an enchantress? Probably. Loki couldn’t consider this too much as a big green force smashed into him, causing him to go flying through the remaining windows of Stark’s tower.
(Y/n)’s P.O.V
When (y/n) finally woke, she felt the stiffness of a bed beneath her and the smell of a sterile environment.
“What the hell?”
“I think I should ask you that, (y/n)” She quickly sat up in surprise, wincing before looking over to a worried Clint Barton.
“Clint, the-the city it’s being attacked, we have to-”
“(y/n) it’s okay, it’s okay! It’s over, we finished them off.”
“You… finished them off?” (y/n) stared blankly at Clint as he looked back at her, almost guilty. “I haven’t been completely honest with you when it comes to my job. I-” (y/n) suddenly cut him off with a smile.
“Clint, you don’t have to. I’m fine with not knowing, I’m just your coffee gal.”
“Well you’re going to see it anyway, so might as well.”
As Clint sat and explained to (y/n) his duty as a S.H.I.E.L.D agent (now not so secret) and how Thor had saved her after he blew up Loki’s carriage with her, unknowingly to them, in there.
“I’m really sorry (y/n) I didn’t know you were with him. Which brings me to the question that’s on everyone on bases minds. What were you doing with him?”
(Y/n) looked guiltily around the room as if her very soulmate tattoo was her own doing and by choice. Clint’s eyebrows came together in a frown as he watched her oddly quiet behaviour. A door opening broke the pair’s concentration as (y/n) looked up to find a certain captain in her doorway.
“Steve! Hello!” (y/n) behaviour was suddenly upbeat, excited to see him once again. Clint narrowed his eyes in confusion, half opening his mouth and pointing between the two. No one was paying attention to Clint as they were focussed on each other.
“(Y/n), I’m glad you’re up.” Steve smiled softly, looking down to the cheesy, yellow flowers he held in his hand. (y/n) followed his eye line and saw the flowers, gasping in excitement before attempting to sit up.
Both men moved quickly towards her as she let out a gasp of pain, trying to help her sit up and get comfortable. When she was finally settled, (y/n)’s smile returned again.
“Are… are those for me Steve?” Pointing lightly with her casted arm to the yellow flowers. “Yeah, I uh figured I’d see how you’re doing after the whole almost world ending thing…”
Scratching the back of his head shyly, (y/n) indicated with her arms that she wanted them. Passing them to her as she cradled and smelt them. Closing her eyes, (y/n) held the flowers close to her.
It had been a while since anybody (besides Clint, but he never got her flowers so…) had anybody had treated her with so much kindness. Her eyes remained closed as a picture of eyes formed behind her eyelids. They were a mischievous green with subtle hues of blue. Opening her eyes suddenly, she gasped clutching the flowers tighter within her hands. Her vision clouded with the green eyes and her ears pounded with the melodic, deep laugh of her soulmate.
“Get the doctor, quickly!” She heard someone leave the room quickly a face in front of her but all she could see was green eyes.
“(Y/n), stay calm. It’s okay, stay with me.”
“Green.” (y/n) strangled out, it seemed to be the only word her brain could get out as a burning sensation crawled over her body in waves. What she meant was Loki, that’s what she needed. Something was very wrong and (y/n) knew it had to do with Loki.
“What, (y/n), what’s green?” The face became more blurred as she let out a final scream of
“LOKI!”
--------------------------------
(Y/n) woke for the second time in the stiff bed with a worried Clint leaning over her.
“Clint? What happened?”
“Hey, you were out again for a couple hours but the doctors said nothing was wrong. Something went very…uh, right?” He couldn’t seem to find the correct words.
“What do you mean?” (y/n)’s eyebrows furrowed as she stared Clint with her piercing gaze. “You’re almost completely healed, (y/n). The doctors can’t even explain the phenomena that happened, it’s like you’ve been healing for weeks rather than a couple days. Also…”
“What is it?” Sitting up, (y/n) felt less resistance in her once broken arm, though it still stung, she faced Clint head on.
“You called for Loki.” (y/n) blushed five shades of red, all the way to the tips of her ears and turned away to look outside the window.
“(Y/N) if there’s something you need to tell me, it will stay between us. Plus, I think I already have some sort of clue…”
(Y/n) looked up into her friend’s eyes, water slightly pooling in her eyes. No, she wouldn’t cry over this and so, she sniffed and blinked to clear it away. Her soulmate doesn’t determine who she is.
“Loki, he’s… he’s my soulmate, Clint.”
“Yup, definitely knew it.”
A laugh suddenly escaped her mouth while Clint’s face remained blank. (Y/n)’s face suddenly drawing to a blank as a question popped into her mind.
“Now, I know this might sound terrible considering he just invaded us and all, but Clint, I have to know, is he… is Loki dead?” Her eyes teared up thinking about the possibility that her soulmate was dead.
Terrible or not, he was still hers and some part of her still wanted him to be okay despite his flaws. She’d waited too long, cried and suffered too much to come so close and have him torn away. She was a strong, independent woman and having something that you’ve always desired before you only to have it torn away so quickly, is devastating for anyone no matter how strong.
“(Y/N), I’m so sorry... Both times while you were out, you had constant seizures and we almost lost you twice. We suspect it was your bodies response to his death.” Clint squeezed his eyes shut and looked away as a mortified scream left (y/n)’s lips.
He couldn’t be! It wasn’t… No!
“No! You’re wrong!” She watched his face, not opening his eyes and not even facing her.
“ How-? Did you-?” Words failed her as she tried to understand the gravity.
He was there, right in front of her. Close enough to touch.
Clint looked guiltily at her, “S.H.I.E.L.D. … This morning.”
“NO!” (Y/N) roared in mortification. If she’d only woken up earlier, explained that he was her soulmate!
(Y/n) stood up abruptly, throwing the blankets off herself and ripping out the needles and wires, trying to put distance between herself and Clint as he tried to console her with his arms.
(Y/n) constantly pushed him away, “Stay away from me!” Her voice was powerful, causing Clint to freeze at the sheer power. The door slamming open, (y/n) saw Steve enter the room in a panic.
“What is going on in here?”
“I-I can’t.” Clint whispered, abruptly leaving the room, head down while on his way out. Steve watched him leave before returning his sights to (y/n).
“I’m leaving.” (y/n) glared at him. She tried to leave through the door but Steve blocked the door with his body.
“I’m sorry (y/n), but you can’t.”
“The hell I can’t Rogers. Just watch me.” Steve winced at his last name, it didn’t sound right coming from (y/n).
“I’m sorry, it’s orders. You’re not allowed to leave.” He attempts to say it softly but there was no way to say it without sounding cold. (Y/n)’s narrowed eyebrows and eyes suddenly smoothed out.
“I’m not only here because I’m injured, am I?” Steve just stared back with guilt. The feeling seemed to be going around like a fever.
(Y/n) knew she wouldn’t get past Steve so she decidedly walked right over the window and looked out into the world. She did this so calmly, that Steve felt a shiver run down his spine, similar to a feeling he got from Loki upon their first meeting.
She was stuck here because they had already known Loki was her soulmate. They would have seen her tattoo and known instantly as she had. But Loki was gone and she was stuck here with people she barely knew and her only two friends seemed to be betraying her for some secret company.
“(Y/N) …” Steve tried, moving slowly closer.
“Get. Out.” Steve stood still, not wanting to leave her alone. He knew what it was like to lose one’s soulmate. It was a stab to the heart, an empty feeling that’s irreplaceable, a cold cry into the abyss.
“Please, I don’t want you to be alone.”
Turning to look at Steve over her shoulder she saw the two-way glass situated just behind Steve, opposite her, and decided to stalk towards it with fists clenched.
“Alone? I’ve been alone all my life and I’ll be damned if anyone thinks they can walk into my life and suddenly dictate what I can and can’t do.” Turning to Steve so quick, it almost made him jump. Tilting her head ever so slightly, (y/n)’ voice was strong and fierce, yet it was spoken slowly; insanely calm that the toughest men would quiver before it.
“I’ve met men like the ones you work for Rogers, they’ve pushed me down all my life, think they can control me, but just watch as I’ll prove every one of you just how wrong you can be.” She smiled menacingly at Steve before retreating back to the window.
Behind a two-way mirror, one Tony Stark turned to an eye-patched man, Fury.
“They share the flare for drama, don’t they?”
“Stark, I want to know everything about this girl. She says she dangerous, then let’s treat her like she’s the worst damn criminal we’ve ever captured.” Tony looked at Fury in disbelief.
“Fury, she’s a kid, let her go. She met Loki for all of two seconds and we’ve just told her he’s dead, by our hands.” He didn’t seem to look like it was changing his mind. Tony huffed and turned his back to the glass, looking anywhere else but the broken girl in the room.
“We’re creating enemies faster than we’re making friends. She thinks he’s dead, can you even imagine a sliver of the pain of losing your soulmate? Then sticking her in a room, just after her only two friends are betraying and lying to her, with her thoughts is bound to drive someone mad. Then she’ll find out and all hell will break loose. We already had a witness account of her having some similar magic abilities to reindeer games. The longer we keep her here, the more chance someone’s going to let slip of little magic boy’s interrogation cell downstairs.”
Fury crossed his arms and turned from Stark to the girl, ignoring his little spiel. “I want to know more about her Stark. I’ll give you three days.”
Tony huffed and walked away and as he did the shattering of a glass vase against the wall in the room was heard. Steve moving out of the room quickly avoiding the items being thrown, (y/n) practically storming after him.
“LET ME OUT!”

PART 2
Jay's POV
Once our food and drinks had been brought and we had eaten, we returned to my room to gather boxes to load them on Steve's truck. With five us, we all only had to carry one box except the strongest of us, Steve, who carried two. Now with the truck loaded, we all are on the way to the compound. Tony called shotgun as soon as we stepped out of HQ so he's currently fiddling with the radio. Steve is obviously driving as it is his truck.
This leaves me, Clint, and Natasha in the back seat. I lay my head over on Clint's shoulder to take a nap. As I nap, I dream of a white wolf running through a giant mansion. It stops and looks at me as if it wants me to follow. Before I can step forward, I am woken up.
Clint is shaking me awake, I look up to see where we are because I didn't expect to arrive so soon.
All I can see for miles is wide open fields, "Where are we?" I mumble as Clint grins.
"There's some people I want you to finally meet," he chuckles, "come on," and he pulls me out of the truck.
Everyone else is waiting for us on the front porch of a little farmhouse. It finally dawns on me that we must be at Clint's farm.
As we join the group, Clint opens the door and walks in to yell, "Honey! I'm home!" very classic of him.
Seconds later, footsteps scramble down the stairs and Laura steps out of the kitchen. The footsteps near and soon reveal the presence of two young children, the third being led by his mom from the kitchen. They rush to hug their dad in a fit of giggles and hellos. Natasha walks over to greet Laura. Steve and Tony wave hello to her from the doorway. I only hide closer behind.
"Clint, Honey, is this who I think it is?" Laura asks as she approaches me.
She pulls me into a hug as Clint answers, "Yeah, kids, this is Jay." As she pulls away, I am then engulfed in a hug by the kids. I look to Clint in amusement.
"We've heard so much about you. Here you all have a seat. Can I get anyone a drink?" Laura asks cheerily. I politely decline as do the others, but Clint goes to the kitchen and finds a fresh pot of coffee awaiting him. I have no doubt that he'll finish it before we leave.
As we all take our seats, Laura sits beside me and reaches to hold my hand gently in hers, "You look so much like your brother," she says, smiling.
"Thank you," I smile back. Her sweet, flowery perfume fills my sense of smell and her body radiates heat. She's so calm and joyful. I can tell why Clint loves her so much. In a motherly tone, she asks for an update on everyone's lives, never taking her hand from mine. This gesture is like none I've felt or seen before but I know that it's meant to make me feel safe and comfortable and indeed it does.
As time passes on, Tony checks his watch, "Man, it's getting late."
Clint agrees, "Yeah if we want any chance of settling Jay in tonight, we should probably get going." Everyone nods in agreement and we all make our way to the door. Clint kisses his wife, and then each child on the top of their head. We all say our goodbyes and within moments we're back on the road.
The truck is full of chatter and laughter.
After what felt like a lifetime, we finally pull up to a security gate. Steve reaches out the window and types in a password and the gates open. As we near the compound, I am awestruck by its size and complexity. Once parked in the garage, everyone piles out to grab boxes. When we exit the elevator on the correct floor, several people in the kitchen just outside the elevator, stop to see who is entering.
A short man with curly, salt and pepper hair and glasses waves. A rather large man with messy, short, blonde hair grins as a bit of lettuce falls from the bite of sandwich he'd just taken. The final person in the room is who I assume to be Wanda, she waves as we walk by.
Steve chuckles at their surprise, "Guys, can you all wait here?"
Tony alerts FRIDAY, "FRIDAY, send out a message, have everyone meet in the kitchen on the quarters floor, please."
We continue on to drop off boxes in the room. Once done, we return to the kitchen for proper introductions. As we round the corner, I notice there is quite a few more people than when we passed by the first time. A tall, slender man in a green t-shirt and black sweats is mumbling something in the ear of the blonde who was eating the sandwich before, the sandwich now long gone. Two more men stand to the side, one with long brown hair and a metal arm, the other with a buzz cut and goatee, the pair look like they just got done with workouts.
Another lady walks up to Tony for a hug, her strawberry blonde hair is pulled back in a ponytail and she has a pencil stuck behind her ear. A teenage boy sits at the counter, scribbling away at what looks like math homework.
Steve clears his throat, "Clint do you want to do the honors?" Everyone's attention is brought to Clint, except the kid who continues with his work.
He looks to me and then back to Steve, "Of course, I'd like you all to meet my little sibling Jay." With a small smile, I wave hello.
The lady next to Tony speaks up first, "Hi, I'm Pepper, it's so nice to meet you."
The salt and pepper haired guy waves hello again, "I'm Bruce Banner, I sometimes turn into the big green guy."
I smile at his attempt at humor as Wanda speaks up, "I'm Wanda," someone else appears behind her, "And I am Vision, I'm sorry to be late. I was fixing the toaster."
The sandwich guy grins joyously and bellows, "I am Thor son of Odin."
Beside him, the man in the green shirt dons a smile as well and bows his head slightly, "Forgive my brother, he does not understand Midgardian volume levels yet. I am Loki."
Pepper scoots back over beside the boy and taps his shoulder to get his attention. He looks up, "Oh, lots of people now. Uh hi," he waves sheepishly, "I'm Peter Parker."
One of the men standing to the side laughs, "You mean you didn't catch that with your Spidey senses kid? Anyway, I'm Sam," he says laughing and nudges the man with the metal arm. Surely, this last person is Bucky. "Oh right, I'm Bucky," he smiles.
"Alright guys, at ease. Just try to make Jay feel at home and welcome," Tony chuckles as he looks over Peter's shoulder, "Calculus again? I thought you were doing that last week?"
"No sir, last week was Trig. Now it's Cal," Peter rakes a hand through his hair.
"So far he's doing really well, I just check it occasionally to make sure he's on the right track," Pepper chuckles.
As everyone begins mingling or going about their business Bucky walks over to me, "So Steve tells me that I'll be your guide for learning the compound and stuff."
I smile, "Yeah, he says it'll be good for us both and I'd rather not be alone. Besides, you seem like a pretty cool guy. A lot quieter and calmer than the others anyway."
He laughs and rubs the back of his neck, "Thanks... I think."

PART 1
Jay's POV
As we near the lounge area where the group has retired to, Natasha speaks quietly, "You can try if you want but I just don't think he'll be too fond of the idea."
"Who won't be too fond of what idea?" Clint asks as he leans over on the back of the couch that Natasha and Steve are sat on.
"Capsicle wants to pair the new kid up with RoboCop," Tony says causally as he pops a blueberry into his mouth.
Clint raises an eyebrow, as Steve scrambles to explain, "Hear me out here, it would be good for Bucky to have a smaller person to protect again like he used to do with me, and I think Jay would be able to relate to him. He could help Jay get used to the compound, train, and maybe they could even teach him how to draw. He's always wanted to but I couldn't ever teach art well."
Clint smiles and looks at me, "What do you think? Up for the challenge?"
I shrug, "Sounds good to me. It's either that or stick to myself. You and I both know you will be busy with defense prep."
Steve grins with I told you so written all over his face as he nudges Natasha, "Then it's settled. I'll text him and let him know."
Tony pipes up, "Didn't know you two old farts knew what texting was."
Steve waves him off as Clint begins a new discussion, "Tony, when's the soonest you can get a room ready at the compound?"
The dark-haired genius chuckles as he taps around on his tablet and then pulls up a diagram of what I assume is the compound's quarters floor, "All the guest bedrooms are always kept ready, in case any surprise visitors show up. It's only a matter of which one does she want. There's one between Hammer time and Reindeer Games, one next door to Dollar Bill, and one next to Mr. United States."
Clint looks to me silently asking for my opinion, I look at Tony in curiosity, "I'm assuming Hammer time and Reindeer Games are Thor and Loki, Mr. United States is Steve, but who is Dollar Bill?"
Tony grins, "I knew that one would trip someone up. It's Bucky, ya know Buck. People call a dollar bill a buck."
I look to Clint in amusement, "Does he always refer to you guys with nicknames?"
Annoyed, Clint responds, "Oh yeah, he's always coming up with new ones. The only time he calls us by name is when he needs something or he's serious."
I laugh, "I like this dude already. While rooming between two brothers can get interesting, I did that for years in the carnival so I'm gonna say no to that," I examine the monitor and notice that the room beside Bucky is in the corner of the floor and furthest from any common areas, probably why he chose that to begin with, "I'll take the one next to Bucky, it looks like it would be quieter compared to the one by Steve which is right by the elevator."
Tony nods, "Alright, FRIDAY, mark that room as occupied, please."
"Sure thing, Boss."
Clint looks to me, "How soon are you willing to move? I don't think you have too much stuff, we could probably box it up and load it on Steve's truck today, if you wanted."
"I'm ready when you all are. Just have to actually get everything packed."
Everyone cheers. We set to work gathering supplies and then return to my room to start boxing stuff up. Natasha neatly takes the clothes out of the closet and places them in two boxes, while Tony puts all my shoes into another box. Steve is tasked with gathering stuff out of my office next door. He leaves any supplies like tape, paperclips, etc. but boxes up my journals, books, and desk decor.
Clint sets about finding a safe way to box all of my personal weapons. A lot of the weapons I use on missions are S.H.I.E.L.D. issued and will be left here but through my years here I have gathered a decent sized collection of my own. All bought with my own paychecks, I have several daggers, a butterfly knife, a handful of pocket knives, some tactical knives, and a handgun, as well as, the holsters and sheaths for them all. This leaves me to pack up my art supplies. I pick up the scattered pencils off my art table and put them back into their pouch. The markers, colored pencils, and paints are all already packaged and just need to be put in the box. I gather my sketch books and place them in first and then place in the other supplies on top.
Once everything is boxed, we are left with two boxes of clothes, a box of shoes, two boxes of weapons, a box of office stuff, and a box of art supplies, making for a grand total of seven boxes which will all easily fit into the bed of Steve's pickup. I also have a backpack full of different things I might need on the way as well as my personal hygiene items like deodorant, perfume, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
Looking around at the work we accomplished in just a short time, Clint speaks up, "I'm hungry and my morning cup of joe is starting to wear off."
"There's a cafe on the ground floor, we could get lunch before we head out," Natasha says as she points over her shoulder.
We all agree and head to the elevator. A short while later we are all gathered at a small table and looking over the menus. As I already know what I want from eating here so often I begin observing my new friends. To my surprise, Natasha gives off a very motherly vibe. Probably comes from living with so many men for so long. As far as I know, she and Wanda are the only women at the compound. She's also very confident and strong and I know I'll get along with her well.
As for the two men sat on either side of her, they seem pretty cool as well. They both give off a sense of pride. It's the good kind though, the kind that says, "Hey, I'm a family man and I won't tolerate any bullcrap if you mess with my family." I can tell already that they'll probably be pretty protective of me once we've made it to the compound.
Clint is tapping his fingers as he decides what meal he wants to go with his large cup of coffee. He's just as I remember him, the comedic big brother who will always protect the ones he loves. For the first time in forever, sitting at this table with a group of people I just met, I feel safe. I don't feel like I have to keep a check on my surroundings at all times because they as a team shift in and out of alert mode almost as swiftly as a conveyor belt. This is the start of something new and I can't wait to see what new adventures lie ahead.

PART 3
Jay's POV
Months have passed and Bucky and I have grown really close. I'm quickly interrupted from my thoughts by the smell of coffee drifting through the compound. I stretch under my fuzzy blanket and attempt to recall how I got here. The last thing I remember is sitting across from Bucky in the training room. I must've fallen asleep there and he carried me here.
I swing my feet over the edge of the bed and pull my pajamas off as I shuffle to the dresser across from me. I open the second drawer on the right and pull out a pair of black sweats with red roses on them and pull them on. From the drawer to its left, I pull out a grey muscle tank and pull it on. Then I grab my socks and shoes as I walk out the door. Halfway to the kitchen I am met by Bucky. He begins telling me something and I realize I forgot my hearing aids. I motion for him to follow as I return to my room and get my hearing aids off my side table.
Once I have placed them in properly and turned them on, I ask Bucky, "Can you repeat that?"
He laughs softly before replying, "I said, I have coffee and waffles ready if you want to join us."
I grin, "Of course!"
We make our way to the kitchen to find Sam and Steve both sat at the island counter munching away at their waffles and conversing causally. I wander over to the coffee pot and grab a mug from the rack beside it before pouring a steaming cup. I join the pair sat at the counter as Bucky places a warm plate of waffles in front of me and hands me the syrup, before taking his seat to my right. As we eat, we join in on the conversation between Steve and Sam. After taking my last bite, I lift my mug to my lips to drink another sip since it's finally cooled enough.
Sam looks at me in surprise halfway through his sentence, "You're not going to put anything in that? Even Steve drinks his coffee with cream."
Bucky lifts his mug for Sam to see his coffee is straight black as well, "She's not the only one who drinks it black."
I laugh as I set my mug down beside my plate, "In the carnival we never really had sugar or cream. Once I got out, I was so used to black coffee that the first time Clint offered me some with cream and sugar, I took one sip and gagged."
Sam shakes his head and continues his story. After a short while, Bucky and I have both finished our coffee and cleaned up the dishes from breakfast. We make our way to the training room to go through our workout routines. Upon our arrival, I head straight for the treadmill for warm up. Bucky prefers the punching bag.
As I begin my run, I start to think about the last few months. Without even planning it, Bucky and I had fallen into a routine. We wake up, have breakfast together, workout, join the team for the day's work, have dinner with the team, and then busy ourselves with something else, and once we've both drained our energy, we retire to a quiet place to sit and chat for a while. At some point during the night, we might fall asleep but most times we don't really get any sleep. As the timer beeps to alert me that I've finished my time for warm up, I move over to the punching bag as Bucky moves to the weights.
I resume my thinking, this time picking up with what just happened. We moved effortlessly along our routine. We work together like a well-oiled machine. We never bump into each other or trip each other up. We just move along.
Soon, it's time for my short break before I myself begin the weight lifting portion of my workout. As I sip my water, I admire the way Bucky easily lifts the bar of weights. I watch the plates in his left arm shift and this brings another thought. Sometime in the last few months, Bucky began to be comfortable with his arm near me. Before, he would never let me stand on his left. Just this morning I sat on his left for breakfast.
As he finishes his set, I realize I should start mine. He reracks the bar for me as I lay down on the bench. I push up on the bar before dropping it back down. Bucky squats behind my head to spot me. Today he has increased my weight so he wants to make sure I can handle it. Once I finish the set and we make our way through the rest of them, we move to the mat to begin sparring. We usually do at least a round just to cool down. Now, with our workouts finished, we make our way back to our separate rooms to shower.
As I enter my bathroom, I remove my hearing aids and place them on the counter. I shut the door behind me, after grabbing clean clothes from my closet, a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt. I remove my sticky, sweaty workout clothes and step into the shower. I turn on the water and wait for it to warm before stepping under the stream. I let the hot water wash over my muscles and relax. My thoughts once again begin to wander as I wash off.
I finish my shower and dry off, before getting dressed once more. Once I'm presentable, I head to the floor's living room to wait on Bucky. Moments later, he joins me and make our way to the conference room. Tony and Steve have scheduled a team meeting today. Taking my seat at the large table, Bucky chooses instead to stand behind me against the wall.
Soon everyone has gathered and Steve begins the meeting. He pulls a few photos up on the board while he speaks, "We've got a lead on Barney."
Mine and Clint's older brother had been caught robbing a bank and taken to prison. Shortly after, he escaped and the Avengers were contacted and put in charge of finding him and bringing him back in.
"We're gonna need everyone on this mission," he looks directly at me, "And I mean everyone."
Bucky speaks up, "Are you sure it's a good idea to have Jay that close to Barney, Steve?"
"No, not really but we need a pair on the sniper lookout. It won't be difficult, just monitoring the entrance from a distance and making sure no one goes in or out besides us. We need two because one needs to keep the rifle while the other needs to be extra eyes and ears."
"In other words, you and Nat are just attempting to work your match maker magic again?" Sam laughs from across the table.
I raise my eyebrow as Tony speaks up finally, "Jay just look at this like your official audition for the team."
This surprises nearly everyone in the room. Everyone except Steve, Nat, and Clint. I assume they have all already discussed my joining the team officially. Steve continues the briefing. Once he wraps it up, he commands us all to suit up because we'll be leaving in one hour.
“[f/n], seriously, you need to stop treating me like a kid.” Clint grumbled, rolling his eyes, “I’m a grown man, I can take care of myself.”
“Not as I remember.” you growled, bristling visibly, “I remember being the one who took care of you. Who taught you to throw a punch? Who taught you how to fight? Who the hell taught you to shoot your damn bow, Clint? That was me! I did all of that! Me! And you have the nerve to tell me to step off?”
