Axe Head from the Loch of Rescobie, Scotland dated between the 11th and 12th Centuries on display at Broughty Castle in Dundee
This axe head was found in the Loch of Rescobie in 1825 and the handle was made from one of the rafters of the Old St Mary’s Church in Dundee. Axes of this type were mainly used as weapons, though early manuscripts show them being used by woodworkers as well.

Broughty Castle Dundee, Scotland by Simon Mayson
Completed in 1495 CE, Broughty Castle played a role in the War of the Rough Wooing (1543-1551). After Scotland’s defeat in the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh (1547), the owner of Broughty Castle -- Lord Gray of Foullis -- surrendered the fortification to the English in exchange for money and fishing rights. It was 1550 before the Scots -- with the help of the French -- were able to recapture the castle; however, by that point the war was effectively over.
Renovation Playpark Cafe
Should the cafe at Broughty Castle playpark be knocked down and replaced with a wooden more environmentally friendly building? We all know the answer is yes because it presently resembles a jungle army encampment; dull, dank, and depressing. Its interior has no natural light and is not appealing. The cafe condition does not encourage spatial awareness amongst the elderly and disabled who pay top dollar for their warm beverage and slice of cake here.
