Working on a Dirk Gently coming now and...
to help me doing the storyboard (the entire script is done and it’s... so.... long guys. SO. SO. LONG.) I screenshot Todd’s apartment in every angle to make a plan of it. And I realized the guitar he smashed wasn’t his only instrument. On the background he also has a keyboard and a folk guitar.
In my story, it’s important he doesn’t have any instrument anymore
And I’m like
Fuck
But I think I can add a line somewhere in the script about it ha ha ha.
Dirk Gently The Greatest Showman AU
Strap in kiddos, cause we’re in for a wild ride
Also, I’m going to list the songs and explain the plot through them, if that makes any sense
original post can be found here
• The Greatest Show – Dirk Gently and the entire cast are singing and dancing. It’s magnificent. Can you imagine it. - It’s everything you ever waAAAAaaannnt - It’s everything you ever neEEEEeeeeEEEd - Everyone is singing. Literally everyone. There are elephants in the background. Silas and Panto are in love. Amanda is belting her heart out. Tina hits every high note. There is confetti. Dirk and Todd harmonise and gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes. - And then BOOM - IT’S DEPRESSING - The camera zooms out and we see kiddy Dirk gazing longingly at a ringmaster outfit outside a store window - It’s vv sad
• A Million Dreams – basically the same, but this time there is no childhood sweetheart and faithful wife. There is only Dirk. He’s alone and frightened in his house, but he dreams about escaping and starting a show to make others happy, because no one should be sad (7-year-old logic). There are some minor changes to the lyrics, and every “we” in the song is replaced with “I” because Dirk is alone. - Well, there’s Bart, but she mostly wants to escape and she doesn’t care for Dirk’s wild fantasies. - In the second half of the song when Barnum dances with his wife, instead of that, Dirk is dancing on the street and dipping and twirling random strangers - The song ends with him seated in his office, surrounded by drawings of costumes and detailed performance plans - And then we see him stare sadly at them and tuck them away in drawers because he’s a responsible and mature adult who has a stable job! Who needs their 7-year-old dreams dragging them down??? - Can we all just take a moment to imagine the transition from kid Dirk to grown-up Dirk and how his voice drops massively and you fall 100x more in love with him
• Come Alive – basically the same as the movie, except with a lot more twirling and glitter. Dirk seeks out numerous people, including: - Tina Tevetino the beautiful bearded lady with a heavenly voice and bucketfuls of spunk and sass - Sherlock Hobbs, the ‘strongest man in the world’. Despite being initially avoiding Tina due to her, uh, excessive facial hair, once they start talking they immediately hit it off and become best friends for ever and ever and ever. Later on, they try to make Dirk and Todd realise their love for each other because they’re obviously smitten with one another but refuse to admit it (honestly, those two are idiots) - Mona Wilder, who can warp her body into shapes that shouldn’t be possible but here we are - The Rowdy 3, who are knife-throwers/flame-breathers with a penchant for breaking things - Also they like adopting people (i.e Amanda and The Beast) - The Beast, a rainbow-haired girl which no one knows anything about and her voice is constantly raspy and she crawls most of the time. There’s a rumour going around that she’s actually a faerie from the forest, but those are just silly rumours amirite - Right? - The Trost siblings, who recently moved to America and their knowledge of mundane everyday things is almost non-existent (almost as if they’re from a different reality hahahahaha) - They join up as trapeze artists, deciding to stay for a short time before moving somewhere else, but through the power of wacky romcom tropes and friendship, they stay for good - Farah Black, who showed up to the job ‘interview’ out of pure desperation after her house was set on fire and all her belongings were destroyed. She offers to manage the financial side of the circus, since she doesn’t have any acts to perform - Dirk hires her on the spot - Why? - Despite his many, many strengths (Bart would beg to differ), numbers are not one of them - Farah becomes his assistant/security guard and reins in Dirk whenever he goes to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a rainbow tailcoat encrusted with diamonds or something - (Like seriously, what is wrong with this man? How is he still alive? Why isn’t he wallowing in the depths of financial ruin?) - Amanda Brotzman, the ‘possessed’ girl, with an amazing pair of lungs and a mind bursting at the seams with ideas - Dirk, obviously, takes a liking to her (she complimented his jacket and stuck a daisy in his top hat! Such a wonderful girl!) and invites her to join the circus - Todd, obviously, strongly opposes this - But at the end of the song, Amanda joins and she is seen singing and dancing with the others and having the time of her life - In the audience, Todd is very worried because what if she has an attack in the middle of the show? What if she starts screaming out of nowhere? What if audience members hate the show and start throwing rocks and one of them hits his sister on the head and she dies? - And then he sees the four imposing-looking guys dancing in wild circles around her, each of them breathing fire and throwing knives at a red target at random intervals - Each of the knives hits dead-centre - All of a sudden, Todd isn’t so worried for his sister’s safety - At the end of the song, after seeing how happy Amanda looks, he asks Dirk for a place in the circus. Dirk, overcome with emotion, hugs Todd tightly and says he’ll always be welcome - (and Todd can’t stop thinking about that hug for some reason)
• The Other Side – As the circus grows in popularity, Dirk finds himself getting more and more swarmed with tasks and other ringmaster-things to do, including the increasing number of riots and the disdain from the upper classes and the poor reviews - Even though he’s got Farah assisting him, the load is still quite heavy and Dirk is growing increasingly unsure of whether or not he’s willing to be a ringmaster his whole life - He decides to hire another assistant, someone young and fresh and hopefully with connections to the high classes (and someone to pass the baton onto, but he doesn’t tell anyone that) - He hears of Silas Dengdamor (a rich, sheltered boy with high-class parents) (this could be his chance to further his reputation with the upper class) (yasss take this chance Dirk my son) and corners him after a play and not-so-politely invites him to a bar to ‘talk’
- Dirk and Silas take shots and dance on bartops
- That’s it
- That’s the whole song
- Afterwards, Silas comes to the circus and is enraptured with a certain pink-haired trapeze artist with a killer smile and a personality as rich and warm as caramel - But men aren’t supposed to feel that way about each other??? Maybe Silas is just admiring the perfect jawline of this exquisite pink-haired phenomenon??? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with appreciating the aesthetics, right??? - (spoiler alert: it’s love, bitch)
I’ll post the rest of the songs soon! Comments and ideas are much appreciated!
Look me in the eye and tell me that these two lil detectives are not in love.
Ok, but on the sneak peek, when Dirk is panicking bc he's stuck on another dimensional house, Todd talks to him in such patient-caring-boyfriend-voice™ I'm soft.
hahaha 😙
