In Fun Home, Helen’s ‘la la la la’ combined with piano is an adult version of a child covering their ears and saying ‘lalalalala I can’t hear you’. As the Bechdel kids join in they are all willing away the knowledge of something being wrong as Bruce seduces one of his old students upstairs from the family.
