Return of the Secaucus Seven (1979, John Sayles)

Vancouver Sun photographer Ralph Bower captured this image of Geraldine Larkin protesting the effect of residential schools on First Nations culture. She was with the Native Alliance for Red Power, which was picketing a meeting of the National Association of Principals and Administrators of Indian Residences at the Blue Boy Motor Hotel on March 12, 1968. The photo appears in Kate Bird’s book: City on Edge: A Rebellious Century of Vancouver Protests, Riots and Strikes, which is also an exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver.
Larkin stood on S.E. Marine Drive, at the foot of Fraser Street, where, according to Bruce MacDonald’s Vancouver: A Visual History, an early First Nations’ trail ran parallel to the river.

🎃HALLOWEEN LIST 2023🎃
I re-watched Pontypool (2008)
This was one of the most surprising and best horror films of the early 2000's.
During a snowstorm, a radio host and his team begin to get reports from their local town, as it's being torn apart by deranged rambling residents.
Pontypool uses zombified people as a metaphor for the idea that language and words can be dangerous. The shock jock (played by the great Stephen McHattie) is a bit of a sensationalist and conspiracy radio host, who may or may not unknowingly spread a verbal disease which infects those listening and turns them into mindless and deadly monsters. It's a topical and interesting idea that works extremely well, especially since this movie is full of good well rounded characters who carry the truly original story. But, what makes Pontypool so fantastic is it's setting.
Pontypool takes place in a single radio station broadcasting out to a small wintery town. A lot of the horror first comes in over the phones. We don't see it, we hear it. We listen to a town begin to fall apart and we don't know why. It's a fantastic idea that let's our imaginations do a lot of work at several points. It's beautifully executed.
Pontypool has a great cast, more than capable of pulling off the fear, emotion and even the comedy that pops up throughout. And, the film does manage to balance all of these tones well.
It's pretty exciting, scary and funny at times. It's well written, and it's good direction allows for a well paced movie, never getting slow, but always picking up momentum.
The film is directed by Bruce McDonald and written by McDonald and the Novelist Tony Burgess, who wrote the Novel the film is based on.
They really put together a very entertaining movie which will hopefully go down in horror film history as one of the greats.
Smart, unique, authentic and just plain good. Even it's missteps are enjoyable.
