Vancouver Sun photographer Ralph Bower captured this image of Geraldine Larkin protesting the effect of residential schools on First Nations culture. She was with the Native Alliance for Red Power, which was picketing a meeting of the National Association of Principals and Administrators of Indian Residences at the Blue Boy Motor Hotel on March 12, 1968. The photo appears in Kate Bird’s book: City on Edge: A Rebellious Century of Vancouver Protests, Riots and Strikes, which is also an exhibition at the Museum of Vancouver.

Larkin stood on S.E. Marine Drive, at the foot of Fraser Street, where, according to Bruce MacDonald’s Vancouver: A Visual History, an early First Nations’ trail ran parallel to the river.

August 7, 1971: An eight-foot-long mock marijuana joint at the Gastown Smoke-In street party, which devolved into the Gastown Riot when police charged the crowd of two thousand, beat them with riot sticks, and arrested seventy-nine people.
