Doctor Who: The Crusade (2.6, BBC, 1965)

#doctor who #classic doctor who #the crusade #1965 #one #william hartnell #jacqueline hill #william russell #maureen o'brien #julian glover #bernard kay #jean marsh #roger avon #walter randall #petra markham #zohra segal #sandra hampton #bruce wightman #reg pritchard #david whitaker #douglas camfield #on a whim i decided to rewatch this and it was only when i sat down and started episode one that i realised i don't think i've ever actuall #watched it before. i certainly read the target novel as a kid and maybe my memories of that were so vivid i thought id seen it #anyway this is a lot of fun. whitakers script is literary and theatrical. its also surprisingly sensitive in places and three dimensional i #approach. the lionheart rather than a bland hero of yore is variously vain arrogant thoughtful and vulnerable #bernard kay's saladin is a real highlight. quiet weary wise but with a streak of hardness and resilience that all great rulers need #walter randall is truly sinister as el akir. there are of course some issues here with white actors cast as poc which is disappointing #especially in kay's case because he's so damn good in the part. but that doesn't excuse it of course. episode one looks quite shocking in #terms of quality. a brief google suggests it survives only in subpar condition or is too fragile to undergo restoration. but this dvd set #must be all of 14 years old so i wonder if technology has advanced at all to enable a superior scan. maybe one day!
