For all that it's still quite a lot of fun and very recognisably The Sweeney; perhaps the most successful translation from small #Screen to big of any of the 70s ITV properties. The cast is a dream; an enviable who's who of Brit acting talent which suggests there must #Been more allure to this than just money (Euston films had money but they didn't have money money): perhaps it was just good fun? I mean #I can't imagine Colin Welland (already an award winning and respected screenwriter at this point) was so strapped for cash that he HAD to #Do this film and get splattered by a stray parcel bomb; I'm guessing he was in it for the laughs. Like much of the supporting cast he also #Did an episode of the TV show; and a lot of the more familiar background faces from the series can be spotted milling about in the police #Station scenes. Garfield Morgan however is very notable by his absence; he'd have a reduced role when the series returned in 78 too

Out of the Unknown: Come Buttercup, Come Daisy, Come......? (1.6, BBC, 1965)

"I think I'd plump for science, if I had a choice. Then I could invent things, and be really sure of what I'm doing instead of guessing all the time. I'd direct all my intelligence towards plants and flowers, and concentrate until I made everybody else think about them the same as I do."

"You mean you'd like everybody to be kind to flowers?"

"Yes."

The BFI sets #But the onscreen title looks to have 5 or 6. So. Now that that's cleared up... (.......). This is a very unusual one; very different to all #The episodes we've had so far. This feels more like one of the weirder Armchair Theatres (actually there is an AT ep about killer plants #But I can't for the life of me remember the title). A potty little story of an amateur gardener with an experimental streak whose floral #Creations are maybe as malevolent as they are impressive. It's silly and slight but fun enough and there's a great cast to hold interest.#Notably several of the cast were better known as comic actors at the time (in particular O'Shea and Rowlands) but it's lovely to see some #Old favourites like Bernard Kay and (a few years before his career defining role as the presenter of thrill filled Road Safety) the lovely #Eric Thompson as local chemist and supplier of some of O'Shea's more questionable plant foods. For all its silliness this has a dark streak #And ends with some puzzling details unresolved and the future disturbingly uncertain... Still I think I'll be happy to go back to space #And aliens and more proper Sci fi for a while...
