January 4, 2026 - Santa Marta Brushfinch (Atlapetes melanocephalus) Found in a small range in northern Colombia, these brushfinches live in shrubby habitats in and around mountain forests and cultivated areas. Foraging on or near the ground in pairs or flocks, often with other species, they are thought to eat insects, seeds, and small fruit, though the details of their diet are not known. They build bulky cup-shaped nests from bark strips, blades of grass, bamboo leaves, and other plant materials hidden in dense vegetation. Females lay clutches of two eggs.
