Explanations for Brycewell so far:

It's just a gaff.

It's Blanewell's school nickname (as per @unreluctantone 's good idea)

Bastard half-sibling got stuck with the naming tradition. This is why Maxwell is so serious about workplace propriety and not sleeping with employees.

Brycewell is a feminine name and Blanewell is the post transition name, but it was rescent and despite trying their best the family still fuck up sometimes (explaining Longspot's politeness when told Olethra is a daughter and not a son in ep.1)

I know Murph misspoke and Brennan later realised it when he repeated the name, but the secret 8th Gotch son is so funny to me

Maxwell said Brycewell with such undeniable confidence and conviction that I think Zood said "fuck it, that must be a real guy I guess" and so Brycewell was born of Zood magic and the Gotch's haven't really realised it yet

I have come up with the following possibilities, listed here in ascending order of plot relevance AKA descending order of likelihood as per my entirely subjective opinion:

Murph accidentally said Brycewell when he meant Blanewell, Brennan assumed this was a previously established name and kept using it without counting.

Murph said Brycewell instead of Blanewell by mistake and Brennan kept saying it as a gag

Brycewell is the eighth son who Maxwell just forgot about until now

Brycewell is the **secret** eighth son

Brycewell is one of the first six sons, making Johnwell the real seventh, meaning the seventh has not yet rung the bell

Brycewell is between Johnwell and Maxwell in birth order, making him the real seventh son
