- i still don’t understand how they could put Madi/Silver at the center of   Silver’s motivation, without showing us anything at all about how they got   together. i’m not invested in them at all.

- Julius is great (+ reasonable and smart unlike other’s rn... right Silver?)

- stop milking Eleanor’s death/pregnancy for Rogers’ manpain scenes

- as much as i loved the silverflint scenes in s3, this season they somehow   don’t have the same weight anymore (does that make sense, idk)

- i loved the entire storyline with Jack. 

- the women (mainly Max and Madame Guthrie) prove once again that they get   shit done

- but holy shit that Jack/Anne scene broke my fucking heart. i actually cried. it   felt so final and i still cannot see how one of them could live without the other.   kill me. :(

- Billy remains a piece of shit, and i don’t like wasting screen time on him.

- Madi, as suspected, is alive. that’s great of course, but i don’t like how she is   used as a plot device for the Silver/Flint falling out... i hope she gets out of   there and far away from this shit.

.- that fucking cache really will be the end of it all

- so now the idea of killing Flint is planted in the heads of not only Jack but   Silver as well. great. i would sacrifice all of these people if it meant Flint could   be safe and find peace away from it all :(

  (i still think the pacing/the whole narrative is rushed in s4. that plus the   focus change from Flint to Silver led to me not really enjoying this season...)

“The truth isn’t nearly as interesting”

That scene with Jack and the, well, the pirate fangirl he meets in Philadelphia, is really something. “History is written by the victors,” as they say, and maybe fiction can be too. For all the thought we’ve put into Flint’s storytelling ability and Silver’s storytelling ability and what they can achieve with it, I for one had forgotten about the storytelling ability of the English establishment itself, and the effect that it can achieve with the stories it decides to tell.

That scene shows us how all of these beautifully complex, morally grey human beings are becoming flattened out, diminished, twisted into two-dimensional cardboard villains to be romanticized by excitable young people. It lets us see how England has “made them into monsters,” as Flint always claimed that they would. But not by building them up into a terrifying nightmare. By bringing them down. That young woman has no fear of Jack. She has no particular regard for him as a person. She doesn’t care that she’s talking about his dead best friend and calling him an animal. She doesn’t care that she’s interrupting Jack’s true stories about Vane and focusing instead on the gossip she’s heard (ahh… gossip. The thing that “holds civilization together”, right?) She doesn’t care why her fictionalized concept of “Charles Vane” did what he did or whether any of it makes sense. She just thinks he and all the rest of the pirates are a thrilling sideshow, something to ooh and ahh over but not to fear or to think about very much. They’re certainly not someone whose point of view you would want to bother learning about, and that’s the kicker. Can you respect someone whose point of view you refuse to see? Can you care about their well-being or understand why they might have come to do what they do?

“It was a little more complicated than that,” Jack protests. And, “What I told you was the truth.”

“The truth isn’t nearly as interesting,” she mutters, walking away from the conversation, and so that becomes the final word on the subject.

And it just gets me, because--hasn’t that become the image of pirates that we still have today? Fun villains, but not really threatening and not really worth understanding or thinking about as real people? And isn’t that what Treasure Island itself does?

What happens when our enemy realizes that all it needs to do to defeat us is to take away that common cause? Turn one against the other. And when that happens, as it is all but certain to do... Which of us standing here are likely to be the ones who benefit and which the ones sold back into their chains?
