Child Yosano Akiko linguistic analysis based on chapter 65

Let's read what she said then

何時 まで 寝て んだい ダナ 兵士 ども! Itsu made nete ndai dana hēshi domo!

何時まで how long, until when. 寝て to sleep. んだい plain and informal んですか. Here it's い instead of か (guestion sentence mark), ん makes it a confirming question and んだ also can express realizations with the nuance of “Oh, gotcha”. 兵士 soldiers. ども indicates plural and shows contempt, disrespect when talking about others. Something like "you, scums / bastards..."

And that "How dare you to call me yours?! I'm gonna cut / eat your ears off!" 耳喰い千切るよ Mimikuichigiruyo

More about her we can learn from this: 先週 まで 和菓子屋 の 店番 だった 妾 を アンタ が 無理やり 徴用したんだろ. Sensū made wagashiya no miseban datta atashi o anta ga miriyari shōyō shita n daro.

先週まで before the last week. 和菓子屋 shop where you buy wagashi, japanese sweets. 店番 shop assistant. だった the end of plain and informal, not-past sentence. "Before the last week l was a shop assistant in the bakery, ..."

The strangest part is kanji 妾. Dictionary says, it means concubine or mistress. But in manga it's another word!

The kanji readings are ショウ (shoo, しょお), めかけ (mekake, メカケ), そばめ (sobame, ソバメ), わらわ (warawa, ワラワ). In manga we read it as atashi, アタシ, one of female pronouns.

Yosano always use it as pronoun in all chapters.

But atashi hasn't kanji.

Japanese kanji it's Chinese kanji but read by another way. In Chinese 妾 is: concubine; I, your servant (deprecatory self-reference for women)

In old Japanese わらわ 妾 warawa used to use instead of watakushi, the most official female pronoun

See? It can be a pronoun. But why? First of all, it's manga, honey! Asagiri can do it if he want. Deprecatory nuance is reference to Yosano's thoughts about herself "People dying even when I do everything I can", " It's because of me", "if only I wasn't there", " I couldn't forgive myself (before chapter 68)". Another thing is one theory about origin of kanji 妾. Now it's 立+女, but in the past it could be 辛 (“torture device”) + 女 (“woman”) = female criminal (isn't it close to her?)

アンタ = you, may be used to express either contempt or affection, depending on tone and context. Yosano very rude with all of them, if it was affection, she would use another words (maybe less rude words at all and "anata", not "anta") Here anta also express her anger.

無理やり against one's will. 徴用 (+する) to conscript, to employ. した is informal する (suru, to do) in the past form. だろ alternative for だろう (darō), informal adverb expressing someone's subjective opinion.

"... But you made me work here even if I didn't want" (or "even didn't give me a choice")

No polite words, this girl doesn't care about subordination at all 😋

Mori admires her fortitude and courage, because as an adult he knows, many other people really would punish her or correct her behavior. I love his reaction) (little parallel between Mori with Akiko and Fuku with Ranpo, both children don't act like good don't-making-problems kids)

She uses informal words and says rude things with adults. But she is more than this badass image. (Much words she uses, irl are more used by men then little girls. But irl atashi is the most girlish pronoun, she could use boku or watashi, but she doesn't do it) She has tight / rigid personal boundaries. She hides behind that mask.

She can show compassion and care, that is the essence of the ability and her soul. She asks soldier who made the hair ornament, "Are you okay? Don't you have any pain?" 躰は平気かい? Even if she already healed him. She is like Gogol. Both are 25/26 years old. Why he murdered people? Why she hurts people almost to the death before healing? Both don't accept the most sensitive and vulnerable part of themselves and don't want to show it. Because of trauma.

Who does Mori actually want from the ADA?

As we make our way steadily through the DOA arc, soon enough we will have to return to the question of who Mori wants to transfer from the ADA to the PM. I know that when explaining the agreement to Yosano, Kenji, and Tanizaki, Mori seemingly disregarded Fukuzawa's one condition of "do not pick Yosano-kun. She'd never be able to withstand assisting you again." (Ch 65, p 7, Yen Press translation) I use the word seemingly due to the specific phrasing of Fukuzawa saying not to pick her, yet Mori saying "Fukuzawa-dono told me it was fine to name you." (Ch 65, p 8, Yen Press translation) Personally, I do think that he did this partly to mess with Yosano and in turn, piss off Fukuzawa as a form of revenge for taking Yosano away from him.

Personally, I think it’s most likely to be Tanizaki because Hirotsu straight-up thought to himself that light snow is perfect for assassination and we’ve seen how far he is willing to go as long as it means keeping Naomi safe. Also in terms of what his ability can do (limitation wise), we know that he can create convincingly real and solid projections (which Mori himself has witnessed) and the only weakness so far has been using heat sensors. Also, although the decision is basically Mori’s to make, Tanizaki did try to offer himself up in place of Yosano, already aware that his ability will be useful to the PM and before having even asked Yosano about her past and why she was so against joining in ch 65.

Yosano and Dazai would be way too against going back for it to be worth trying in my opinion. Also, Dazai has hinted that Mori is scared of him because Mori taught him just about everything he knows, so he knows very well what Dazai’s true potential is in terms of cruelty. I know Mori has asked for Yosano when explaining the agreement, but I honestly do think that he did it to manipulate and mess with her, possibly to partly anger and get back at Fukuzawa for taking her away from him all those years ago.

Also if he asks for Naomi instead then Tanizaki will join too or we’d get a beast situation (use Naomi as a sort bargaining chip to get Tanizaki and possibly the rest of the ADA to do exactly as Mori wants). Because when Hirotsu did mention Naomi in ch 48/ep 34, that’s what angered Tanizaki and had him prepared to kill the Black Lizard members that were in the room. It would be a more roundabout method but it would get Tanizaki to follow for sure and can also be used to manipulate the rest of the ADA since they do all care about each other.

I doubt he’d ask for Kyouka back but I wouldn’t entirely eliminate the possibility. Kouyou would also most likely go against this decision since she’s seen that Kyouka very much does have a spot living in the light and allies that would protect/back her up.

There’s also the chance of asking for Atsushi because of his raw strength. Yeah, he’s not in the same type of spot of vulnerability as at the beginning of the story so less room for manipulation due to his growth. Also, it's pretty much just Mori left that would be manipulative but in that case, maybe Kouyou would try to protect him and assign Chuuya to look out for him, assuming Mori does ask for Atsushi. The argument of asking for Atsushi for the sake of having both halves of SSKK is in a sort of limbo as of ch 93 (when writing/posting this) because although we now know that Akutagawa can still use Rashoumon, we don’t know yet how if and how Akutagawa can regain control of himself (aside from Mori getting ahold of Bram), which would make joint missions for SSKK difficult for now.

Also just making sure I have all of the ADA members covered:

Ranpo would call everyone stupid and they already have to deal with Elise’s antics + plus he’s cut out for almost only detective work, though he’d be really good at strategizing. However, Mori is already there and the way of thinking and strategizing preferred within the mafia aligns more with Dazai’s strategies, since Dazai was trained with that intent in mind

Kenji tends to just go with the flow (he legit just went with the majority in the cannibalism arc, and didn’t really have his own opinion on what to do) which can backfire but I think it’d be very interesting if he was chosen. Also due to both his willingness to pretty much go with the flow and deal with things as they come as well as being younger, it would certainly be easier for Mori to manipulate him. Honestly, I would even go as far as to say that there’s a fair enough chance of Kenji being chosen. Also, we’ve seen how unphased Kenji is by all the violence and brutality he’s encountered throughout the main story.

Kunikida would never give up his ideals to that extent if he could do something about it. He does resort to violence (to the point of Dazai reminding him that Fukuzawa has told him to control himself more in ch 1/ep 1) but it’s more when it’s a necessity (you can see a bit more of my analysis on this here) that he would resort to it.

I very much doubt he’d ask for Fukuzawa cause Mori and him are basically rivals but it’s also not impossible considering that in his bodyguard days he did work for/with Mori, even if he didn’t like it. Sure Fukuzawa may be the one in charge of the ADA but it’s already been addressed on multiple occasions as to who would be in charge should anything happen to Fukuzawa (both in Walking Alone and the Cannibalism arc).

I doubt Mori would ask for Katai because he is a former member, but Mori also didn’t specify that it had to be a current member of the ADA. Higuchi was witnessed his ability in action first hand after all. However, looking at the illustration from when Mori first proposed the question again, the ones pictured are Yosano, Kunikida, Ranpo, Atsushi, Dazai, Kyouka, Kenji, and Tanizaki. Plus, Katai really does not like the PM and needs to be comfortable and focused to use his ability so would he even be willing to work if he was chosen?

Considering this is also Mori we're talking about, his decision has to be one founded in logic. So in conclusion, I personally think Tanizaki or Kenji are most likely to be chosen. Although the rest of the ADA is bound to hear of the plan soon enough, I'd say there's a fair chance that there was a point in Kenji and Tanizaki being in the room too when telling Yosano of the plan, who he likely partly wanted to mess with as well in giving this info. Also, Mori was the one to get them from hiding, so there could be some significance to that, but who knows for now.
